I do need to explain that my Protex slave cylinder is actually leaking. I fitted it to up before engine & trans came out and the clutch fork was wobbly on a loose pivot pin and there was also no adjustment available in the pushrod. Driving it in and out of my garage & a quick squirt up the lane had it leaking straight away, I'm assuming because the piston was cocked in the bore during operation or something like that.

Since refitting, I discovered tonight that it is still leaking. I'm not sure if it was due to my clutch problem or if the slave itself isn't that flash. It cost $55 including delivery, from these guys on ebay, namely because my parts guy couldn't get one any cheaper and the seller has sold over 100 of them with 99.9% positive feedback:

Mix one part Grey motor generator mount, one part Red motor alternator mount, mix over a concentrated arc flame shielded by an inert gas, and voila:

I’ve got some more metal to make up the rear part that bolts to the rear mount in the block, hopefully tomorrow. Pulleys look to be in good alignment though so I’m on track:

welding is easy when the two pieces you’re welding together are new, very clean and heavy gauge (like this)... I wound my MIG up to high wire feed speed, much higher amps and a tad more gas pressure than I use for panel work.

The stuff you’re doing is harder - thin metal, welding new steel to old. My only suggestion is to hover over the new piece and move toward the old and see how it behaves. Mate, there are some real crimes hiding on my car, don’t worry! Some days it will take three or four goes to find the right combination of speed/amps and time hovering over the joint before I find the sweet spot. Others it just happens and you roll with it.

I highly recommend a TAFE ‘enthusiasts’ panel & metal working course if there’s one available near you. My brother and I did one in the evenings under a brilliant bloke, Vaughan Williams, here in Syd and it took us both from being complete hacks to passable welders and metal shapers.

Passable as in: ones that engineers sign off on ;)

Promised myself some time off, but life hasn’t been too kind on me this week, so some quality shed/therapy time has been had. Finished the lower alternator bracket this evening. it’s bloody perfect... though the straight top bracket will soon be replaced by a curved item from a Val 318ci V8 that’s on its way - thos blades of the alternator fan are a little too close for my liking!

There’s some good swell on the way I’m told and weather looks good this weekend, so I reckon it’s beach time. But I’ll still endeavour to wire up the alternator and get the radiator back in at some point as well :)

Happy to report that the alternator swap went very well indeed, I even managed to re-wrap most of the wiring harness in the original blue tape up to the voltage reg, which I’ve left in place for appearances. The disused wires from it are terminated inside the harness.

My original horns are cactus. This one is from the wrecked VX Storm Ute that donated it’s 6.0L LS motor & trans that we installed in my bro’s 65 Impala... its now bolted directly to Leroy’s rad support on the LH side and with all that metal acting like a plate reverb, it’s really loud! Gives it a much meatier and more vintage sound than the whimpy Commodore note too

Also ran wiring for my new H4 headlight conversion across the car inside the lower bonnet latch support bar, which is neat. Damn hose H4 headlights are bright, but not horrible and modern looking. Very happy with how that turned out.

I’m just happy to be screwing the front end back together at last, soon it will be time to spin the car round and drop the axle out to fix leaks and overhaul brakes :)

Lights look the part. I installed Hella H4s years ago in my sedan. They had the flat faces which I didn’t mind but more pedantic souls found fault.

Weird though, how something like that bugs me, but other types of modernising I'm fine with. For example, I totally loved the Commodore steelies on the white V8 EK Ute that must've belonged to someone who worked at the pub in Stanmore near my house. I never found out who owned it... wonder if they're on the forum?
