Haven't been on for a while - the whole resto was doing my head in.... everything seemed to go wrong, one bit after another, people stuffing me around :shock:

Took some time away from it but slowly getting back into it.
The car is due back in at Frank Tedesco's this month for the reconditioned steering box to go in. Then all mechanicals are then done :clap:

Then next is the interior - I have the vinyl to fix the seats also had some door cards lined up for painting but nothing eventuated so still on the look out

Then fit some spats then the final bit of rust removed....Then she will be fully finished. Getting close but next time I'm buying something already finished!

Also thinking of swapping out the twin SU's to and original carb (if anyone has anything please let me know) or even a twin Stromberg set up.

Yeah she has been on the road for over 12 months now - just one setback after another! Bloody old cars!!!

Yeah having issues with running rich at low rpm - Frank Tedesco has been telling me to throw the SU’s in the bin 😂

There is nothing wrong with SU carbs… but I bet yours are 1¾”.

Your typical grey motor Strommie is good for around 160cfm@3”Hg. A 1¾” SU is good for nearly double that (about 300cfm). Put a pair of 1¾” SUs on a grey, and all of a sudden you have four times as much carb as GMH intended. Awesome at high speed… not so great at idle.

There is an old myth that says you cannot put too large an SU carb on an engine. The old mythmakers reckon that an SU has a variable throat, so at low speed the throat closes, and they act like a small carb.

True to a point, but also not so correct.

With an SU that is too large, the throat only moves over a very small range. The throat contains a needle, and it is the profile (shape) of the needle that changes mixture. If the throat is only moving a little bit, the needle is too. Instead of trying to control mixture by changing the shape of 2” of needle length, you are stuck trying to get the correct shape over ½” of needle length. This makes the needles very touchy to changes.

So in reality, too large an SU will only use a poofteenth of the needle length at idle, making it very touchy to fiddling and very likely to give rich mixture.

How to solve the drama? A 1½” Strommie is good for around 200cfm, so a pair of them is good nearly three times as much carb as the original single Strommie. They will work nicely over a larger needle range than the 1¾” SU, giving better tuneability. Equally, a 1¼” SU is good for 160cfm, so a pair of them will behave very similarly to a pair of Strommies.

The problem is, no-one wants to run twin 1½” or 1¼” SUs, as the 1¾” carbs look sexier.

Hi Harv,

Thanks for the reply

I am running 1 1/2" carbs - they were refurbished by SU midel here in Sydney

The car was sent off to Carb and EFI services (at Blacktown) when I first put the SU's on as the local shop couldn't tune them - turns out the local shop couldn't do anything and the car needed everything redone that they did :evil:

The Carb and EFI shop tuned the carbs on a dyno as it wasn't registered then, he did say it was running a bit rich but he preferred that to running too lean.

When starting and taking off it does run rich and splutters and backfires occasionally - once cruising along it is fine.

I really dont want to take them off because all up I have spent over $2k on getting them refurbished and I may take the car back for one last retune and play around with needles and jets.

Big shout out to Frank and his son Anthony at Frank Tedesco motors aka the Holden Guru.

Got the car back off him and it is running sensationally - finally finished all the mechanical side of things.
Reconditioned steering box make such a big difference,with new never fitted before nasco steering lock also attached.
All new shocks and springs and a wheel alignment - and the car is atually pleasant to drive :wtf:

Finally said goodbye to the twin SU's and reverted back to stock - after going through 2 carbs with the float collapsing in one, and the other we got refurbished came back leaking!

Car is running perfectly. Frank ended up in hospital half way through fixing it but still managed to somehow finish it all.

Only thing left to do is put the battery back into the original position and get a reproduction wiring loom - then get the engine bay refurbished by Frank

Then interior to do.... then air conditioning ...... then hopefully done!
