Thanks everyone. The fun was a bit short lived today. The trip home was a set back as the vibration got somewhat worse and we also encountered oil pressure issues. Half way back I disconnected the bypass filter and ran without it hoping it would bring the pressure up (thinking maybe the restrictor was too big). No luck. Removed the engine pipe bracket and locked the exhaust flap. Vibration noise persisted so we pushed on. If anything it would have shit itself well before if there was anything major......fingers crossed. Anyway we got home and I decided to change oils (was using running in oil) and plonk a gauge on. Oil pressure seems ok. Stuffed around and eventually found the sender was stuffed and so was two others I had! Oil pressure problem solved. Vibration prob took a bit more and it looks like I might have a dud steel timing gear. Dropped the belt and ran it, the noise sounds very raspy at certain high Rpms. Could be backlash or end float. Not sure. I do have vague recollection of problems with incorrect helix angles being cut on after market gears. My FB has a JP steel gear and is nice and quite. This one is a Thomas gear so is an unknown. Engine out tomorrow, also have to trim out the bell housing because of the clutch cover rubbing.

Nah didn't get in there as it wasn't open till 11:30. Kicked around the town for a little bit then hit the road......with mechanical dramas in the back of my mind I didn't want to waste whatever time I had in case it went pear shaped on the way home. Next time for sure.

Engine out and stripped down. All looks good but the backlash has increased somewhat. No appreciable wear but the thrust plate feels like its picked up. Will have to get the cam gear pressed off tomorrow to have a look.

How much backlash and end-play did it have Craig?

Cheers,
Harv

Could it be a harmonic balancer issue - I can't recall if you said you replaced that or not.
Might be a question for Harv but can the fan having a bent fin or image create issues such as vibration?

Harv it had .005" end float and .006" backlash. Backlash has increased a bit to .010"
The thrust plate doesn't feel smooth against either the cam of cam gear surfaces.
Hoping to get the sump off tomorrow to check all the bearings and look at the pistons.
