nah fuel lines are fine. im gona try the condenser etc from the blue one and see if i can find the problem

coil is fine, distributor cap is probably a bit iffy coz the blue car wont go now that i've swapped them over to test it.
the dizzy cap and leads from the blue one are on the grey car-still wont go. maybe i should blow them up and get insurance money

going to try a new distributor cap and new plugs today-see if that helps.
is it possible that the timing is 180 degrees out, but somehow ran fine for a few days? i doubt it but this car is making me think of some silly ideas

BINGO! this will make me sound like an utter idiot, but new plugs did the trick-runs like a charm again.
it was getting spark with the old plugs, but it mustn't have been sufficient to ignite.
oh well, this has still taught me a few little things and im happy it happened even though it drove me insane.
