Cal/Theo
You may be right. I held some hose to the join between exhaust pipe and manifold and in one small spot there is a very audible difference in sound and volume.
Would I expect to hear the same noise as what I described earlier (rattly) though, as what I'm getting through the hose from this particular spot is a louder, more breathy expulsion of air??
I have to duck out for a while, but Theo, if I get nowhere with this, I'd be keen to take you up on your offer. I can come over to your place though. Don't want to drag you all the way over here just for this.
Will let you know how I get on later this arvo.
Cheers, Scott

Scott, in my case the pipe had actually came loose from the flange.
Check to see if the exhaust pipe that sits under the flange actually moves (it shouldnt). With mine, if I pushed the pipe up into the flange the noise went away.
The noise you're getting through the hose is just air. The noise you get when you have an exhaust leak and you're listening to it from a far will be different.
I can understand your concern with the noise. When my exhaust went, I didn't know what the noise was. It sounded like I'd stuffed something in the engine, as it happened after I gave the car a good thrash on the freeway.
It may sound normal to others, but you know when something is not sounding right.

Scott, I'm only over the hill from you. I had the same problem with my headers. X2 headers with auto choke vacumn pipe. We put two bungs in it and after three weeks of driving, one bung came loose and it sounded like a truck, No difference in performance But a hell of a noise! Two taps with a new bung fixed it plus a tack weld. I drove it for two days before we worked out what it was and it sure let you know about throttle control!!

Cal...that's exactly what's frustrating me the most. I know there's something very different to what the engine should sound like, but others listen to it and kinda look at me like I'm imagining things, when I expected them (mechanics) to hear exactly what I was hearing.
To my ears it's clear as day, which is where I really think we benefit the most from the experience of others who drive the same cars/engines and understand what is normal and what's not.
Theo, I forgot that you're on the same side of town. I could certainly use some of your wisdom to narrow this down.
In the meantime, I just got back in so I'll run out and try jiggling the exhaust to see if there's any movement there.
Cheers, Scott

No movement in the pipe - that I can determine anyway.
Theo, will send you a pm.

In my case the pipe had come loose, hence the leak. Your's may be something like a blown weld, which would be just as noisy

Ok...some progress.
Was able to have one of the guys from the EJ/EH club have a listen/look and he discovered a few issues that were able to be resolved.
First and most annoying was the fact that the new points had been installed incorrectly. Gap was too small (less than 8 thou), and contact was not being made evenly (the 2 faces of the contact points weren't lined up...top of one was meeting the bottom of the other). Dissy/points therefore were pulled down and given a general overhaul, re-curved and put back together.
Secondly, the leads had been pushed back onto the cap incorrectly when the dissy was out at the mechanics, and had burnt out in some areas. The #1 lead connection at the dissy was filled with bluish deposits (carbon???), and the cap had traces of arcing in that area. Leads were repaired, cap cleaned up and dissy re-installed. This will now have to be replaced though so will be looking for a new dissy cap.
Thirdly, timing was out, so once dissy was re-installed, it was re-timed from scratch, test-driven with appropriate advance and car ran beautifully.
That was all we had time for, but the change in the car is huge and was obviously a major part of why she was running badly.
But...a certain aspect of the noise I was hearing is still there, and I believe will be the leak I have at the flange. I'll do more checks to be certain, and get an exhaust mob to look at that aspect, but at least now the really worrying part of the problem is gone and all I have to contend with is one smaller issue.
Theo, still keen to get together, to get a fellow FB/EK enthusiasts evaluation.
