The wiring is even simpler, if you're using a modern alternator with an built-in regulator. These were fitted to all Holdens HJ & later.

Unwrap the harness between the old reg & gen & follow this.

The only 3 wires that matter are:-

1. The thin brown wire that goes inside to the dash (gen light). Connect this to the spade terminal on the back of the alternator. You may have to extend the wire to reach.

2. The thick red wire at the old reg. Connect this to the bolt-on +ve terminal at the back of the alternator. You may also have extend this one too.

3. The one everybody forgets. Run a new thick black wire from the alternator bracket (or any bolt on the block or the head) directly to the body. Use one of the old regulator mount screw holes.

Hi Dr Terry

I have just done this conversion on an early EH. Using a Bosch alt that i had on my HR ute
Done steps 1 and 2 .. but forgot to run an earth from the motor to the body...
Result was .. everything worked fine.....No gen light while motor running ....all seemed good....Gen light came on when ignition turned off ..... the gen light stayed on even after the key was turned to the off pos and the key removed???
. Is this because i didnt run that earth lead between the body and the block??

Hey guys,

Been having problems with the old generator recharging, so I've decided I need to do the alternator conversion. I'm just running the old grey in it and just wondering how to go about it.

Does this look suitable?

I've also seen that a bracket will need to be fabricated, but I have absolutely no technical ability with metal work... How hard is it and is there some sort of template for one? I will get the auto leccy to hook it all up for me, the bracket part is the bit confusing me the most.

Thanks,
Bec

Jeepers that's almost the price of the alternator!

I'm hoping I can convince a friend to make one for me :)

Does the link for the alternator look right?

Not sure on the alternator, I had a mate who's an Autoelec do mine as I'm not very good with electrickery. As for the bracket if you can't get someone to make it it's probably the cheapest option, main thing though when making one is to make sure all the pulleys line up with each other. If not you'll be chewing through fan belts.

V8EK4us wrote:Changed the Gen and Reg to one wire alternator today. Made the bracket using a Holden red six alternator bracket with a few mods, pics below. The one wire alternator has 2 spade terminals marded #1 and #2, run the gen light wire (brown) to the #1 terminal and a heavy wire to the + (positive) on the battery. Remove the regulator and all old wiring as it is not required anymore !!

The front generator mounting bolt was replaced with a stud and nut.

I used the original Generator adjuster, reshaped it and relocated it to the water pump bolt obove the original one.

Hope this helps someone in the future... :D :D :D :D
Follow what Gaz did, I did similar and it's not that hard.
I took it to a pro welder to weld it all together  .

Thanks! I have managed to get a friend to make me a bracket!

Now I just need to find out what the right alternator is. Anyone know if that link to one is suitable?

Well duh I haven't made the bracket yet, I'm not that much of a girl! What I meant to say is I've lined someone up to make me one once I sort the alternator out.

So any ideas? :)

Hey Gaz

Just getting around to doing my conversion and got the red motor bracket. Just wondering if you can give me all the measurements of your fabricated bits so I can get it absolutely perfectly made?

Thanks
Bec
