It's a standard safety requirement upgrade for the engineer's report (Whiplash). Just like heater demister, external mirrors etc.

But as we all know, some times you can get around these things. Commercial vehicles get more leeway (if on a full chassis).

HQ's didn't have highback seats and had all size motors from 173 to 350 (oh and New Zealand Highway Patrol 130 cube reds  )

HJ was first with the highbacks and they had engines from 173 to 308.

I don't know why an engineer would ask for highbacks when HQ's didn't have them :? :? :?

Terry.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

Only the very first HQ's didn't have headrests in '71 all HQ's made in '72, '73 and '74 did!

I'm just telling you what the two usual engineers I have used ask for when adding big horse power increase.
My '71 LC XU-1 had to have high-back seats when I put the V8 in it in 1988. So too did all the other conversions we did during the '90. I remember the EH we put the 427 BB into had normal EH prem buckets and we had to borrow those poxy slip over head rests from a pommy Morris or Austin for the engineer's report (and they got stated on the report) Never seen them again after that day though!

Check with your engineers.

Hmmm.........

My '73 and '74 HQ's here at home ( I thought they were original ) must have been changed over then somewhere in their past as they both have buckets with the low headrests. :?
Another HQ here ( '72 ) has the High backs which I thought were from a HJ.
My other '71 HQ has bench seat.

Not doubting what you say smooth

I was thinking maybe very late HQ's ( late '74 ) may have had high backs as that's when the ADR's started that stipulated high back seats mandatory ( or around that time?? ).I know HJ,HX,HZ were definately all high backs.

Seems that engineers opinions can vary greatly as to what they require and their interpretation of the rules.

Terry.

I can tell you of a few people whom have all suffered whiplash in rear end impact, regardless of the high back seating or head restraints fitted.
So there theory dosn't suit me.
I rather the SHIT brace yourself, where about to prang method, only cause I like the lowback seats in all vehicles of that era.

Terry,

Headrests or highback is what is required for rego. HQ's had headrests except for first release '71 HQ's which had no headrests just like a FB.

Tombstone highbacks started in HJ.
