The roads through the Flinders Ranges, and from Blinman to Arkaroola are perfectly manageable in an old Holden. From there you can go to Lyndhurst, north to Farina (stop at the bakery if it's open), then Marree, William Creek and Coober Pedy.
If you've got that far, then why not turn right, head up through Marla and Kulgera (take photo of car and give to the owners to put up in the "classics gallery") to Uluru and Kata-Tjuta. From there it's straight ahead to Leonora.
You know you want to.

We drove the short way to th eRed Centre Nats a few years back , albeit in a LandCruiser ute - I would be happy to take the red rattler through there as long as it wasn't wet but I wouldn't take the ute - it still has reasonable paint on it

No shortage of stone chips from 6000km so called highway on my last trip. I might have done twenty or thirty km of dirt road.

Stone chips are unavoidable if you drive your car - but 800+km of dirt roads in a car with no mudflaps will torture the paint

Very true. Got some front ones from Effbee to go on, and some original rears somewhere.

Ok Guys,
I've booked accommodation and am looking forward to the trip.
Hopefully the car will be sorted and I can drive it all the way or worst case I will trailer it, we shall see !
