Ok folk,
maybe it's time we made a collective approach to Rares....
Many years back, the Vic club were invited to an open night at Rares out at Campbellfield. (they even supplied pizzas for a meal).
We were given extensive look through the factory and many questions were answered.

A question came up from the floor about what Rare's would tool up for, and what they wouldn't.

The answer was remarkable...

They told us that they would tool up with an expense of $250k for a small item, yet wouldn't tool up for something that would easily retail if it could be sourced elsewhere or could be manufactured from something else readily available...

Further, they state they had no issue in outlaying the $250k to tool up for something which kept the vehicle on the road - and was necessary to do so...
They had put a bit of thought into this... the last thing they wanted was for vehicles to come off the road permanently.. they'd lose their market.
This has been (or was) their working business philosophy...

Ok, pre-amble done.... we all will need wiper arms, linkages etc. etc... they are a necessary component...
Yes, they are going to hurt in price.. but - they will be needed, by almost all of us eventually....

It might be time to approach Rares (if they do not have these in stock already) and set the seed......

my thoughts,
frats,
Rosco

Correction - Truvision USED to supply them but in their words they became cost prohibitive so they stopped bringing them in from wherever they were sourcing them from - I wouldn't be surprised if they were ex USA off something like a early 50's Chev ........
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Thanks both for posting.
Yes, that's what I read in the thread.... I was under the impression they were down to the last of their stock... hence the PM's which were sent in obtaining some from members who had surplus....

I believe we should approach Rares and find out if they will have them tooled up for supply.. these are an "essential" component to keep our cars on the road...

Thanks for clearing that up messers b and r. I also don’t get how there is a shortage of wiper arms relative to cars. I know the splines can strip out, but generally found them to be pretty robust and outlasted many a car back in the day, which is no doubt why I have a number of sets........... somewhere. Just can’t put my hand on them at present, not even for the ute, but that can wait.

Problem I always found was that they are useless at speed. This could possibly be improved by the use of significantly stiffer springs, so if new ones were to be produced it would be worthwhile to consider this.

The after market wiper fins don’t do much to improve things

I went down this track in 1973... on P plates back then, we were only allowed to go at 50 mph here in Vic... a year later - no plates and allowed 60 mph... and later 70 mph when they lifted the speed to that for a short time... and even "de-restricted" (a circle with an angled line through it).

My wipers were just ok at 50 mph... but when I was allowed to run at 60 - they "lifted" off the glass and also made that horrible "flap-flap" travel as they exceeded the mechanical limit and there was over-run at both ends due to wear in the arms, pivots and linkages....

My quick fix -when McEwans were a hardware/auto/anything store - was to purchase some three finned plastic clip on pressure blades...
Worked ok - but useless above 60 mph.. the generous frontal footprint of the front window on our old buses is not what anyone would call "streamlned"... they are raked back quite vertically... and there is a huge amount of pressure build up... lifts the wipers off the glass under this pressure...

At the end of the day, all those pressure wings did was wear out the splines and linkages faster... the initial design, using white metal splines and wiper arm bodies... had a limit of stress... the fitting of larger wiper blades (mine were/are called "storm-chasers" - hated them from day one, and still have them fitted) and these pressure wings thingys only caused more damage to the mechanism than was it was designed to tolerate...

Since then, I have simply learned that over 50 mph.. I just turn the wipers off... if I'm not following traffic and it is chucking up muck onto my window - usually if the window is clean and it's just rain hitting it - the pressure of the frontal incoming air will blow rain over the top and along the sides of the window...

If ever you want to see how "un aerodynamic" our windscreens are... take a peek when you go to wash or clean them after running in dirty road muck... the design is really terrible.. the earlier FE and FC plus later EJ and EH were much more aerodynamically designed and raked....

legacy of owning one of our delightful old relics, I'm afraid.. you simply have to accept that these terrible windscreen wipers are part of the "job lot"...

Not to mention those poor souls with vaccuum wipers... we, at the upper eschalon of having electric wipers... never tell the FB people that they are useless at higher speed.. they still "think" we have much better windscreen wipers... realistically - we don't...
