I just found my new EK has the same problem when I filled it for the first time. It appears to be coming from the send unit as the top of the tank is very clean & the cover & around the send unit has some surface rust.

Questions...

1. How do I get rid of the petrol smell? It does have the original insulation on top of the boot.

2. Will the mat settle back down? as it has "bubbled up" near the send unit

3. Do I just make a gasket for the send unit or use Silastic?

Haven't tackled this problem before.

Thanks

Jacko

Is there anything you guys don't know! found the leak! A few pin holes around the send unit. I will try your suggestion of "Metal Mend" Smooth & make up a gasket out of cork. I figure one can't use anything but gasket near fuel. :)

Sounds like pin holes in the top of the tank to me in and around the fuel sender unit.

You can fix this with "Metal Mend" for fuel tanks. Roll the putty in your hand and push it into the pin holes. Sets like - well err, um metal!

Welcome to the forum.

Hi and welcome to the forum..I had this problem when i brought my yellow and white fb wagon and it was a shocker just take your mat out of the back and shake the shit out of the car(better done when tank is full) and you will see if it is leaking on top. Then do what SMOOTH said...Cheers Mark
