Another weekend of progress after a few cock ups.
Sorted the issue of my replacement lower control arm with later bump stop mount but only after my Mig stuffed up and had to fix that as well.
Seemed like I was going backwards but eventually made some headway today.

Control arm now fitted with early bump stop holder, just needs blasting and repaint.

Rear springs all finished and ready to be fitted.

Decided to tackle my front door hinges and replace the hold open spring plates.
Firstly drilled out old rivets and punched them out to remove the old broken plates. It then took some brain scratching to work out how I was going to do the rivets. I eventually made up a small adapter for my old Coxhead brake lining riveting tool. Its a bit fiddly at the start getting it into the inside of the hinge but overall it only takes a couple of minutes to do. It took longer working out how to do it in the first place.
Pretty happy with the outcome :D :D :D

Had a hell of time doing the steering box up mostly with getting out the old outer bearing race in the top of the box out. Needed some trickery with the Mig welder to put some spot welds on the race so I could shrink it to get it out. Just a shitty spot to access without removing the column tube off the box.

Box polished and clear coated. Column tube to go.

You're making some good progress Craig. :)

Question - what brand/type etc clear coat did you use on the steering box? It's OK to use straight over the bare mteal? What sort of prep?

G'day Stewart,

I used White Knight Rust Guard. Its good for alloy, brass, copper, etc to prevent corrosion/tarnishing. I got it at Bunnings.
I had the box soda blasted to get all the old crud off it and then buffed it up with wire decarbonising bit using a drill.
Washed it down with dual purpose thinners a few times then let it dry. Applied the clear coat as per instructions - did 3 coats.
I'm hoping overtime it doesnt go like some laquers i.e. browns off. Its been done for a few weeks now and still looks ok.
Hope this helps.

Cheers.

Hi all,

just a few update shots as the paint starts to go on. Finally finished all of the minor body repairs needed and now its time for some colour!
Have done as much as I can do with matching and finding the right colour mix formulas. Starting next week to do some trial mixes of Apache Red. Engine bay and under floor has been done in satin black with stone-guard in the wheel arches and boot areas. Have tried to replicate the areas as would be done in the factory but with some neater edging.
Next problem is sourcing my front guard rubbers before they get mounted. Still chasing the rear bumper rubber as well. Nothing found yet "angryy:

Bew da ful work Craig. 8)

I don't think any of those rubbers are available.

I was able to make the one that sits along the top lip of the inner guard fairly easily from some U channel I bought. I cobbled the rear bumber one together. For the one that runs down the back edge of the guard I have strip of rubber but it's missing the bit that sits under the guard at the top.

Thanks Scoobb & Stewart. Its a long road but good now to see some results. I'm pretty envious of yours Stewart.....I cant wait till the day I turn the key!
Its still a long way to go. Don't think I'll make the Nationals this year.
Tomorrow I'll be getting onto Spectrum Rubber who apparently supply Rare Spares. Pity Rare Spares don't sell them as I'm sure there's plenty out there that need them.
Thanks for the tips on the rubbers.
How did you go with your brakes??

Cheers
Craig

Guard rubber at Clark Rubber. Get the large one. Take the old ones in as a sample. I didn't take pics but Rusty has them and they fit. Anyway when fitted they can't be seen
Wayne
PS. You will need to trim them.
