Could also be a slipping gearbox.
You do really need to check all engine specs first. Chevs love around 10.5 to 1 compression and with a good head port and cam should be able to reach 300 on the treads easily.
Sometimes people can make the mistake of bigger is better and that includes valves, carby, cam, manifold etc etc.

Get some specs and you can go from there.

This is my 283 chev engined Stude and it gets exactly 300 RWHP.

i saw this car get built and have been in it and it was very well built
