From memory there are two lenght HQ arms and i used the short ones (or was it the long ones or maybe the HR ones). The knuckle is about 20mm clear from rim edge. So 4.5 inch backspace rims should still clear
Pics might help
Just looking at the link FB MAD posted and maybe i ended up using HR armswhatever they are they work anyway
are they hq stubs in the photo with ht disks???

They are vented so wont be HT, more like HQ-WB.vintageholden wrote:ben wrote:I run the same setup Shane HQ stubs/hubs and HT 14x5 ROH steel rims which are 4inch backspace and nothing hits. and for a front mount rack you do need to swap the stubs from side to side.
And if anyone is interested i have a pair of HR stubs with LJ discs/calipers and CRS re shaped steering arms for a front mounted rack in the for sale section .

Disc/hub, stubs and calipers all HQ-WB . I'm running the calipers to the front and going on another post it looks like i ended up using hr steering arms (no mods ie bending etc) . The drag link idler etc are all hr. The calipers required a little grinding to clear the ROH 14x5.5 steeliesare they hq stubs in the photo with ht disks???

HDs have the same track as EHs.vmx-mxr wrote:This might seem like a stupid question but.........
Are there any differences between an HD or HR cross member, upper/lower control arms, steering arms etc. If not I guess a lot of them have already gone along the way as other stubs could be fitted etc.
I have a HR front end but it's so bashed up underneath I was thinking of broadening my search to HD? Unless someone has a clean one they want to sell?
Cheers
Dave Mac
HRs are a bit wider, about an inch from memory.
HDs have shorter control arms as well,Although the complete frontend will swap straight over.
Early HDs had kingpin frontends which were the same as EH except for the snout, and maybe the engine mounts,I cant remember.
I have also had the tyre clearance problem when using a CRS frontend with a torana rack conversion.
I was using HQ stubs and discs and standard HQ wheels.
At the time they were supplied with reshaped HR steering arms, which hit the tyre.
When I contacted them about this they told me to get some half inch spacers machined to fit between the steering arm and the stub axle.
This was staight from Rod Hadfields mouth when he still owned the company.
I dont know what they do to solve it now.
I would never buy another one as the turning circle was appalling.
This problem may have been fixed, but I could not say for sure one way or the other.
And Dave,I still have to call you, sorry

that's a funny looking stub it's definately a drum brake stub with adaptors are you sure it's a holden stubvintageholden wrote:where are the vents then????
these are vented...
as to the others whether they are vented or not it's the guy (ben) that put the pics up car so i'de guess he knows what brakes are on it, it's prolly just the angle of the pic that you can't notice the vents

Re: steering arms.
Ive just put my HR front end together and have noticed that the steering arms when on full lock will hit bottom of the wishbone.
Im running a front mount torana rack with HR steering arms onto HQ stubs.
When I put the front end in will the weight of the car "level" out the lower wish bones enough so that the steering arms dont hit?? Sorry if this has been covered somewhere else, but I couldn't find anything.
