Never mind - that was an old cross member - no harm no foul - back to plan A
The new pulley on crank comes forward 20mm which is perfectly fine for clearance except the fan which will foul around 15mm with no clearance to pulley
Fan at front has 20mm clearance to the rad fins but only 13mm to lip of top tank so I think a fan spacer of 10-15mm and a low profile fan is the more likely option
I can easily take 5mm out of back of the fan edge and tweek it flatter profile a few degrees but worried about making it less effective

Ive still got 15mm of forward movement of rad to play with on top so at a pinch could take 5mm there

In the photo looks like it clears, no?

I used an after market fan with all the pitch to rear on a red motor installation. Just cleared the fan belt, and the impeller shaft was the closest thing to the radiator.

like Clay said, it looks like it might just clear. try with the plasticine template again with the squished bit removed from the profile and see if it clears.

oh, maybe it wouldnt go down any more :ughh:

Its been yonks since I have looked at grey motors and clearances but I thought some input may be better than none !

You have a twin groove pulley on the blower is that to drive it or is it for the accessories ? The reason I ask is it possible to drive the blower with a single belt from the crank and still miss the fan ?

I know you want it period so I'm guessing an electric front mounted fan is out ?

Yes twin pulleys to drive wray - one small v would be under a lot of pressure and no safety measure if one breaks - Im sure I can make it work - elec fans just wouldn’t suit it

Damn Rosco... now you made me remember my rods. I went looking for them, but cannot find them. They are in a pine box with a sliding Masonite lid. They taught me words like cyan, magenta and crimson... and that they made excellent forts for plastic toy soldiers. They are here somewhere, though I found other stuff I had forgotten - photos from my grandfather from WW2 Haifa and Cairo, commonwealth bank books, and photos of a very young, plastered Harv that remind me that my son’s shenanigans are perhaps hereditary.

Anyhoo, back on topic. A single 11A belt will hold up a Norman/Wray, but is marginal. Double belts are needed (triple if you drive it like Eldred). If Rob gets this on the road and only drives it like it needs a single belt, I will be disappointed. Don’t make me come down there 🤣

Ive just done a search and it doesn't show anywhere on here "how to do a burnout" in a 138 EK

I'll be honest and say I have never even tried in the ute - Is it build lots of revvy things and drop it into Second and hope for the best?

When I built my Studebaker group NB race car i considered a factory 289 (not &*#@) engine and a Paxton supercharger as the rules dictated that engine components must be original.
I had contact with a fellow racer in WA who was running this single V belt system quite successfully and I nearly went down that path but the bits were difficult to obtain. In the end I went with the 283 chev engine as the Stude came out with that motor before the business finished in 1965.

So that is why I asked the question about the pulleys. The paxton was capable of running in a fast revving race car with one belt although from memory it did throw them occasionally.

Anyway your doing a great job and I look forward to seeing the results.

Oh and a burnout in the Ute will probably destroy the rear uni first then the diff then the gearbox then the motor (don't ask me how I know !!!!!!)

Cheers Greg,
I'm pretty much doing as told on this one - Fred believes a twin is the way to go so I'll start down that path as we wanted to run the same size V belt (cross section) as the fan belt to look matched - if that doesn't fit with all the clearances then I guess we can look at replacing that with a single larger belt to save a bit of space as the position of pulleys on blower has a little adjustability but on the balancer it's not quite as simple - or custom would be also possible.

Some science, from my Norman thread.

The question then becomes how many vee-belts we would need to drive our supercharger. From Supercharge!: “Now as to how many belts are required to drive a particular supercharger. This depends on the type of supercharger, its size and the amount of boost intended. As a rough guide a standard car engine of 1500 cc. using a seven pound supercharge and pulleys no smaller than 4 inches will require one 'A' section belt. A two litre with the same boost can manage with one 'B' section. A three litre will need two 'A' section. And a five litre V8 will need three 'B' section.”

Translating this to a 138ci (2260cc) grey motor, running 5-10psi of boost would infer a single “B” belt (like FX/FJs ran), or two “A” belts (like FE-EJs ran) under heavy loading. This is very similar to the modeling presented below, which shows that a single modern 11A belt will probably handle most Normans, whilst a second belt is appropriate under heavy use. Mehopes that Rob's Wray will see some heavy use 8)

I can't cut-and-paste the calculations and data for modern Gates belts - please see the attached pdf file.

Rob maybe trade in your 10 spline for a 28 spline trutrac with v8 pinion flange.

Lol - I think the gears will give out before the Diff - even with this massive hair dryer the shetlands will turn into palominos at best
