ImageMaybe I’ll just go black suede

The skin off the ute gate is pretty devoid of rust, but has a big dent which keeps popping back in. It seems easiest to just replace as the skins are pretty affordable.
The frame just needs a cleanup and straighten and patch the hole cut in the bottom.Image

Clay,
I didn't realise tailgate skins were available, or did you manage to find an old original tucked away?

It’s a repro Stephen. They’re readily available through rare spares and others. They are universal to FE - EK ute and FB - EK van so I suppose the broad application makes it viable.

The rear quarter sides of my wagon were like that - tended to pop in and out. I watched Dave play with an oxy torch, heating and then cooling in various spots to tighten it up (all done pre-paint). I don't understand how he identified where to heat (panelwork, like IT, is a form of sorcery) but it really fixed the issue.

Cheers,

Hey Clay that is a pretty good quality skin by the looks I met a guy when I was offshore recently who's brother is the guy in queensland making these I think and he is selling through a few places and I can't remember is name   I think he was in Ipswich or rockhampton or something like that.

The body of your tailgate also looks to be in pretty good shape mate this is normally the bit that gets rotted in the bottom so hard to find a good one Oh and by the way it looks like it is an FC one from what I can see :wtf: :wtf:

Hi Neil
If you think back you identified early on that the tailgate is FE FC and the skin had the corresponding badge holes so quite right.
Yes I believe yo are right about the manufacturer I believe and the quality seems good. The price sure beats some other suppliers.

Friday night bath timeImageImage(lemon juice)
My paint gurus say the 2k epotec 408 inside the gate or else kbs. Apparently the epotec is about as waterproof as there is. Will be a matter of drilling and plug welding the seams. How to get some weld through primer on the steel around the plug welds. Not sure about how to get best protection between the seams. Maybe mask off and use zinc rich acrylic. Panel wax finally after top coat.

Used a strip disc and 120 emery and got most of the black off the inside. Imagete long promised rain and cold has finally hit Willunga so painting may be on hold.
