EK rims

Post by matt71 »

Is there any visible difference between EK rims and FB/EJ/EH/HD/HR rims?
I'm chasing a fresh set of clean rims for my EK van and didn't know if I could expand my search to the other models

Cheers

HD/HR rims are different - you'll notice that the back of the opening return on the inner wheel has been cut right back.
The offset is also different on these latter wheels..

A special wheel was introduced for HD and HR with disc brakes - it has a groove around the inner rim and a hole drilled in one of the webbing spokes to indicate disc wheel compatibility.

I am of the opinion that early (FE-EH) wheels will ''crowd" the brake drums of HD/HR..... binding up as the wheel nuts are tightened.
I might be wrong on this, - but am positive on the HD/HR issue.....

ps - had to take a peek... checked all factory workshop manuals FB through HR... all shown as 13 x 4.50 J with drop centres.... 4.24" nut spacings.
We know there are differences - not mentioned in the manuals, though...

Ok - just did some more research...
It's only numbers and doesn't tell us what they relate to but....

Part number for wheels fitted to FE,FC,FB, EK EJ & EH (except 2104 & 2106 all models EK-EH) = 7408888
Wheels EK - EH (2104 & 2106) = 7419194

See! - there's one more difference between FB & EK I bet not many people were aware of.....?

I don't have a parts manual for HR - but HD had a different number to above.... 7423241

somewhere along the line they had no safety bead lock on the rims also that may be the differance where the part No change comes in, i thought EK didn't have them either but that was kinda just a guess

I think HD/HR rims are the 1st of the spot welded centres to clear the disc callipers,as the rivots on the earlier rims hit the callipers.

Thanks gents for the info.
So the difference in the part number for van and ute rims I'm guessing is that they were to fit six ply tyres rather than the 4 plys originally fitted to the sedans, wagons?

Anyway-if anyone knows of any stock van/ute rims that are for sale please let me know. I'll mention it in the parts wanted bit as well.

cheers
