cam shaft and crank

Post by colzy28 »

Good afternoon All,

I have completed a basic stripdown of my grey, and have some queries to the specs of the cam and crankshaft.

I would like to know the details of the cam or where I can find them out (first three photos). I also would like to know about the modifications made to the bearing caps(last photo).

I was informed that the engine had had some work done on it when it was purchased but that was about all I was told.

Any leads on what the internal specs are, would be appreciated.

Cheers

The crank has strengthening blocks to help stop the crank flexing and breaking, Looks like you had a good engine there, Trev 8) .

The main bearing blocks were a common mod many years ago. Don't know if people still do it ?
I had the same blocks on a grey in the mid 70s that was done in Sydney by Waggott Engineering. Can't remember if they had those allen key bolts in them though ?
Impossible to tell what cam it is from photos other than the fact that it is fitted with an alloy timing gear.
Cheers,
Baz.

Hi Baz, a few people I know have made some new ones for there grey motors, the allen key is to screw down onto the cap so it doesn't flex, Trev

The blocks on my one may have had the allen keys. A long time ago and I don't remember.
I do remember that I had to give Waggot my Main bearing caps and they machined the tops of the caps to accept the blocks.
Cheers,
Baz.

The bearing supports were a common ( in the day ) strengthening modification to assist to preventing main bearing cap float and loading and failure of the bearing from crankshaft whip under higher rpm.

Best thing you can do for a grey crank is to have it balanced. It makes a hell of a difference to its smooth running and helps considerably under high rpm situations.

Hard to tell by the photos but the cam lobes "appear" to be not as steeply ramped as a standard cam ( giving more opening duration ) would have and may have a slightly higher lift?? so it may be an aftermarket cam maybe??.
You could get a camshaft speialist to have the cam specs measured maybe if you really want to know its exact specs.

Measure the valve head diameter as they sorta look about red motor valve size??

Is there any port work in the head?? Measure the bore to see what size it is.

You might need to provide a few more pics.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

I havent seen any for sale anywhere - I think its a " make your own " deal.
When you're faced with an unpleasant task that you really don't want to do, sometimes you just have to dig deep down inside and somehow find the patience to wait for someone else to do it for you.

Hey Dave, the guy who is going to rebuild my grey has spoken to me about these caps... he's into historic racing and knows a few things about hot greys... will let you know how I go... I'm also chasing down a Vauxhall L model engine for the crankshaft too...

I know someone who has a shop manual with that very information Terry, and I would give him a call, but today he had all four wisdom teeth taken out...

Hey Dave, I have been told on good authority that you want a crank out of the early L model engines, not the later ones, as these will not fit, so be careful...

Eric told me about the bearing caps at last year's Eastern Creek Classic... will buzz him soon about my engine...
