hey sam I was in a similar situation to you all be it a hell of alot older but wanting an EK (which by the way really does stand for EXTRA KOOL) and apart from checking out the papers really not knowing where to start. Then someone put me onto this web site and I jumped on board and within a month or so I scoped out a thread from (AUST)Mod thinking about selling his EK, saw the photos and after getting in contact with him viewed it drove it and bought it. It has a 161 red in her, trimatic with T-bar, commodore rack n pinion and HR front end, she drives well. Im NOT a totally mechanically minded person but I do know that parts are cheap for the running gear and this set up for me was gonna work well.
I needed to replace a badly damaged door and fender on her, put the word on the site and had some good advice and offers for what I needed, but now because im in and out of this site almost everyday Im picking up ideas about where to look and what to look for. People are worried about the cost of parts going through the roof but if you be dilligent and forward thinking you would be suprised at what you can find. I just scored a completed EK minus motor and gearbox for $800, bloke wanted $1200
BUT I just threw a price at him and he said yes. This thing has all I need on it to replace my damaged parts plus heaps of spare body parts that I can use or via this site swap or wheel n deal to maybe help someone else out. The best part is these things are like a lego set, you can take small parts off the car and replace it without pulling the entire car apart and laymens like me can do some of the work so I am just gonna have fun with this thing.
All this has happend for under $5 grand, thats for both cars and the best thing is I stayed local so I could see them for real which was important for me. So hang in there Sam the right one will come your way when you least expect it.
good luck

The thing is not to rush it, and end up buying something you don't want.
I took my time a bit, and didn't buy certain cars (for various reasons), that I now wished I had. I got a bit impatient and ended up buying something that needed a bit more work than what I'd hoped for.
So the moral of the story.............Don't pass something up in case you think something better might come along, but on the other hand don't rush and buy something that your not 100% sure on

honestly it's best to decide what you want, cause if you buy a stock car and then want to modify it unless you or a mate can do the majority of the work it can be very expensive, for example a member here J just did a real basic red motor conversion where he spent $4,000 god only knows how but i'de assume he was taken for a ride along the way somewhere
Hey Sam - once you land a good one stop for a while and enjoy the view!
Now that I have me a great ute I am cooling my heels and weighing up on which way to go. It is from my quick looks at it due to this shitty weather a VERY good car and I don't want to screw it up.
Find a car you like and then weigh up what you can afford - EKjimmy has so far enjoyed just cruising in his old Hydra. Slow as a wet week but what a car for a young bloke. Every time we are out in it people look at ya !!! Probably thinking "poor bastards - no air con" lol!!! Or more to the point wishing they could drag themselves away from the modern shitbox they are stuck in and have a cool old EK with chromies !!!
The KISS principle KEEP IT SIMPLE S........
Good luck - we're all hoping you get a good one !
