Rust Problem

Post by aussiebogan_no1 »

Hey Everyone

I was just wondering how much rust is too much rust and what can be repaired and what cant.

The main parts i am worried about are the floors and the section below the rear doors.

Is it repairable?? Would i be better off stripping it and selling the good parts?? or buting a donor shell??

Any info would be great. Even if you just guessing i dont mind.

Heres some pics of the rust...

Richard, the wheels on the ute, not my cup of tea, too modern looking for me, but if you like them thats all that counts :D .
Looks like alot of rust to me and it's not been stripped yet, do that and have another look,

Hey,

Had you heard of one of the newer paint stipping technique "Soda Blasting" they had a review on it in street machine its apparently alot gentler, and its dessolves in water so you dont have sand falling out all the time.

Any one had any experiences with Soda blasting??

Is the rust i got repairable??

I was looking at a set of dragways but they were in pretty average condition and price was heaps for the quality.

The new ones turns a few more head but i bet there sayin Bloody P Plater hahaha

How is it structurally? ie Y Frames, chassis rails etc
It has more rust than mine did
And I had 1/2 door skins made up,new sill panels,
front floor sections,etc,etc,etc
What is too much rust?
Ive seen alot of hotrod work
and alot of that stuff is from the 1920s30s40s-rusty as!
It seems to have some "good bits"on it
anyhow have fun stripping it :)
and if its too far gone
find another and use the best bits from both
thats what I did
Ute looks nice 8)
Wheels dont look 2 bad-at least they're 5 spoke
but 5 spoke dragways would be better
But dump/slam/lower it

Enjoy

Richard the rust looks fixable, but it will cost unless you do it yourself or have a mate who can. Strip it bare and reasess the situation. A parts car or another complete car is a good way to make 1 good one.

As for the wheels on the ute, not my style. But please lower the bloody thing or are you planning some offroading? The rims look too small for the arches, but hopefully lowering the car will fix that. A nice set of 14" chromies with baby moons would have been a good choice as they would work well with the darker colour. But hey its your car and you are the only one that needs to be happy. :D

* Edit*
Just had a look at your other post with pics and it looked like you had 13" Chromies on it
Speed and Style........... One day I'll get the speed bit.

Hi Richard
My vote is for the chromies you had on it.
An old holden ute is classic aussie, even more so fitted with chromies.
Add some new carpet & kick panels, and lowering blocks to the rear.
Sell the wheels to someone with a more modern car
to which I think they are more suited.
Thats my 2 bobs worth.

All the best with it

I had one of my EK`s soda blasted, it looked so good in bare metal I couldnt bring myself to paint it for weeks ! I wanted to put it in the lounge room but Mrs Blacky wouldnt let me :(
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

mine was a bit like that, i thought of all options and the only one that seemed practical was to buy a mig, if you are loaded send it of for some other poor bastard to fix, it took me two years to get the rust out with no socail life apart from a couple of breaks for the nostalgia drags.

G'day Richard.

There is a bit of rust but everythings fixable, Man'o Man if all of the other guys and gals on the forum who have posted there works in progress is not enough to get you inspired, then maybe you shouldn't tackle such a job yourself. (I'm am not saying that in degrading way, or putting your working skill down), but Grab all the mates you can with a little bit of skill, pile a couple of weekends together and start stripping, Your EK may look pretty shitty now, but you'll be surprised on how much better it looks after you strip her back to metal, and start cleaning the rust up. It is then that you will know what your working with. Do a search on Google for body prep tips, most hotrodder forums are more than happy to share and offer information.

With the powers of Photoshop I had to lower your ute to see what it would look like.

PS. The Biggest tip I can give you is do a panel at a time.
But Check the other common rusty places FB/EK's are notorious for: Up under the dash in the corners, the lower rear windscreen sections, under the the rear parcel tray, in the front subframe and collar ties on the Body,
Under the windscreen pleanum.
