dont get rid of it hey.. especially for some 'nice coupe'

put it aside and find a cheap little run a round

I had the problem of not being able to afford to fix the problems and re rego my wagon moved to a new town crapy job blah blah blah
I got a little ke70 corolla paid 300 for it put in a new clutch put a kit through the carby, some points plugs leads and a set of hotwires on it we been to queensland and back sydney to dubbo countless times the thing hasnt missed a beat and fuel economy is excellent
now things are a lot better for me the wagon is in the shed getting the treatment it deserves. the missus uses the rolla on her Ls and I got another run a round a HR (thanks ratbox its goin good)
you can pick up the little older corollas cheap theres parts for them everywhere and ther a pretty goot shitter. theres even a forum like this one dedicated to them with good help
AND
you still own one of the coolest kinds of cars there is

come back to the EK later its worth it there not getting easier to get and they never will

just some rambling advice in the end its your call

It's scary enough to have brake problems when your driving by yourself, but when you have someone you love in the car that could have gotten hurt, now that makes you open your eyes :!: .
Get the brakes fixed properly (no short cuts) for your piece of mind.
Cars and debt go hand in hand, especially at your age and situation, Still going to school and having a car that is not your every day shitter is something you should be proud of :D , and feel lucky that you have it, so don't be too hasty in selling it, just pay off the debt as quick as you feel comfortable doing with out becoming a hermit by not having enough money to enjoy life as-well. Don't sell it J..........you will regret it.

If you spent the money on the EK that you would need to spend on a "nice coupe" that is new enough to not give you grief (at least 'til it gets a bit older) then the EK would be shmik! I am sure that everyone here would agree that in 48 years these little imported, rice burning, under engineered, recycled coke cans will never be "restored" or "customised" 'cause they will never be "strawberry jam" (to quote stinky) they will always be shit.......main difference between a classic that got a bit shitty and a "nice coupe" that is shit from the start is that the shitty classic can be repaired, reshaped, rebuilt into any vision you have because they are made to last and have ageless style, the imported, rice burning, under engineered, recycled coke cans on the other hand are exactly that....a recycled coke can, that why they crush them..... so they can make a new "McCoupe McShitbox" for a cast of thousands, be individual J, keep the "Custom" EK....Gees, after all the stories we've heard about your EK already I think it should have flashing lights on the roof and "HOOTER PATROL" plastered down the side

J, maaaate...............think long and hard about it before you part with your CLASSIC! :D

Great wisdom here in what Jay has to say , Id start out by taking everyones advice if you want no regrets.
Buy a 90s corolla as I have , they are great little cars ,good on fuel ,reliable as hell , but they also do a great job of making you miss driving the EK and regret selling the last one.

A good motto to live by is "If something gives you a headache - fix it , or get rid of it"
In your case getting rid of it is going to give you a headache .
So lets move on to "Your stuck between a rock and a hard place" 8)

Or as my wife would say "suck it up princess!!!"...

J as the others have said you will regret getting rid of it. Fix it slowly and properly, get a shitter, work two jobs on your hols if thats what it takes to get the car how you want it. But you have to bite the bullet and choose what you want more. If you really want the EK done, pull out all stops and make it happen. Otherwise ditch it and deal with the regret, because you will have it. Buy whatever it is you want but be warned it too will be a money pit as you will possibly be buying someone else dream turned nightmare...

But life never is easy. We've all been there before, I remember spending ALL of my first fulltime pay cheque on a new box for my Torana at the time, which left me flatbroke for a month (we got paid monthly!).
you just need to work out what is more important to you.
Speed and Style........... One day I'll get the speed bit.

SELL IT  but it needs work so i doubt you will even cover yor 4 grand debt so buying a "nice coupe" could be a problem unless you are borrowing more money to do so
IF the EK is yor dream car spend money on it but if you want something else there's no point spending money on the EK
when i was at school i had a push bike and didn't get a car till quite a while after i left so think yorself lucky and don't worry that it doesn't have the wheels you want the paint you want or the trim you want

i was just about to put mine in the for sale section till scubbs wrote those words they're just getting harder and more expensive to buy which i know from experiance

basically if it's something you want like others said by a shitter and make plans, if it is just a kool hack till you get something else might aswell stop spending money now cause if you can't do much yorself it'll end up owing you a fortune for a car you don't really want

ahhh...pretty much what Tim just said. Nailed it I reckon.

Besides that, I'd keep in mind that buying any other car that isn't new and under warranty is potentially going to be just a different money pit. Maybe not - you might just be fortunate enough to buy something affordable that never gives you any issues or concerns, but the possibility (and chances) are always there.
If you were going for more of a 'sure thing' (ie: new or newish) then you'd be looking at paying some decent coin anyway...and in that case, may as well inject the same amount into the ol' girl and end up with a much better outcome.

If you're really down in the dumps about it, I'd at least suggest not doing anything on the spur of the moment like selling before you have the benefit of reflection.
Tuck the EK away for a while, find something else cheap enough that you won't break the bank buying, drive that for long enough for you to clear your head and get through the current stage of your education, and then take another look at it 6 months from now.
At least that way you won't be putting any more immediate cash into it, you can concentrate on your study, and let's face it...if you do decide to sell, the extra time isn't going to lower it's re-sale value.

Too many people have sold good cars thinking it's the best option when often it's only one of many options.
Good luck, Scott

Il stick with it for a while...

Craig - would u prefer me being a hoon with a grey motor and braking heaps of parts which could potentially save urs in the future, orrr hooning in a red motor braking parts which wont effect u at all.

Had one prior to finishing the EK. Nice and all, I do miss mine. BUT, it is still an old car. When I sold mine it was rooted as I drove it into the ground. They are no cheaper than an EK and quite possibly dearer to run (even on gas that is!) and maintain especially depending on your right foot!

Either way buying an older car you have to ask why are they selling it? If its purely money based you might be right otherwise chances are you're buying someone elses problem.

Stick out the EK, in time you'll get it the way you want it. It took me 19 years and 6 or so different go's to get a car exactly how I wanted it and 4 of those were building it.
