fitting hj steering into fb

Post by edd »

hi there am new to this site and looking for advise i have a 1961 fb holden with a 179 red motor and original gearboxand was wandering what was needed to fit a trrimatic gearbox ,i was hoping to get it back to column shift cos the previous owner hacked a hole in the floor and stuck a sick on it, i have a hj auto steering column and linkage can this be refabricated to the original column by just using the auto column bits or can i fit the fb steering box onto it.i work at an engineers so refabrication wouldnt be a problem,we can pretty much make anything so long as we have dimensins etc, also are there any members in bunbury or perth cheers edd :?:

Firstly Edd Welcome!

i can help with a few of the questions, firstly to fit a trimatic you'll need a larger tunnel (either cut one out of a later model auto vehicle or the prefered choise is a CRS (rodshop.com.au) pre-fab tunnel that you weld in it and an Auto carpet will fit over, you will need to fabricate a new crossmember mount, i know devilrod's done this, search through the My FB EK section and you may find some pictures... not too sure on the coulmn however, you could try sourcing an Auto EK colum nand connecting it up or possibly using an EJ / EH / HD / HR however i'm unsure on this....

as for WA members there's plenty, AustMod & J generally organise crusise and there was a member sign up not to long ago from Australind, check out the what's happening in WA section for more details.

Also have you got pic's of you FB, cause we all love pictures here!

cheers

Welcome to the forum edd, I think the HJ steering box thing would be a lot of work for bugger all reward , I am pretty sure rares do a reco steering box kit or maybe even a service exchange deal that would save you a heap of drama. Call Paul at Rare Parts on 9470 1117 - he will give you the drum on whats available.

Cheers, Blacky.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

i'm running a Lokar shifter (16inch) on a TH700, have it all bolted up an in the car, at full forward mount in will still allow a bench seat to be fitted, there cool shifters providing the wallet can allow enough change to fall out!

cheers

i know what you mean, but if it saves a lot of hassle its worth it ,what engine have you got with the th700,nearly went that route but it seemed easier to bolt a trimatic straight on the 179 edd
