new engine in car,different no's
Guys, considering buying a car which the owner has told me has a new engine, he found a really good engine so he pulled out the 138 and whacked in the new 138, now my question is ...for NSW what is the law, can I buy the car and just keep it as it is, he is just transfering the rego to me, so I figure only a blue slip situation would cause me grief. But is it just a matter of reg the new engine number with the RTA???? Should I pressure him to get it sorted before I buy....need some advice please! Thanks

Ray,
Years ago I did engine changes for myself and a lot of friends, back then if it was the same type engine and capacity you didn't have to worry until rego time. The guys I used to go to just swapped the numbers on the paper work and that was it. Today I'm not sure you had best check! A quick phone call to your pink slip man should reveal the answer. Not that it is but be carefull cause the engine could be stolen you just dont know! I would get the number changed first before I bought it (you will sleep better).

Ray,
Simple engine number change in New South Wales requires a "Blue Slip" the rego agent has to sight the engine and record the number. It is a simple process and is not a full blue slip roadworthy check. Just an engine number sighting.
If the bloke really wants to sell the car then he should do it (probably by law anyway)

Engine No
When I got Mable my current EK she had been unregistered since 1981, remember the old style NSW rego labels, well the engine No on that and the engine in the car were not the same. The present engine has an L prefix and it looks like a reco engine as it has brass welsh plugs {don’t talk to me about perished rubber seals and parts}
Anyway when she was Blue Slipped the new engine No was put on the papers.
I don’t think it would have made any difference in this case as the Girl at the RTA said the car was so old it was not on the computer system
However in your case I would advise you to get the correct engine No on the current papers after all you don’t want to be charged with “attempt to deceive”
Get the seller to do it for you as it is a legal requirement
And as Greg said you will sleep better.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the L prefix is a 132 out of fe/fc's.

I am not going to correct you, according to my research that engine No was December 1958 FC seriesTrev wrote:

That’s why I think it’s a reco engine
The whole car is so interesting as it had brand new brake shoes and the drums had just been machined you could still see the marks, I think work was being done for rego but it all got to much.
It lost a front wheel at one stage as the subframe is all dented and the Kingpins were shot that’s why it was a “project car” for 6 months
