engine running rough

Post by muddy »

hi all

you will all be pleased to know the mighty FB got me and 3 mates to byron bay and back no worries.

the bad news is, on about the last 2 hours of the journey home, a little miss appeared. i didnt think much of it, just assumed things were slowly going out of tune, points wearing etc. figured id give it a tweak when i got home. when i eventually got home, it was absolutely weak as piss, struggled to get up hills in any gear, the clutch got tortured on the last couple of kms up to home. it was also backfiring a little out the carby.

so, i replaced air and fuel filters, plugs, leads, points, set the timing, took the carby apart and cleaned everything. i put it all back together, and now there is an intermittant miss, and after idling for about 20 seconds, start spewing smoke and sooty black water out the exhaust.

this leads me to a few questions - my dear sweet girlfriend left the ignition on for somewhere in the region of 7 to 10 hours. could this constant current to the coil damage anything? secondly, i noticed in my manual it says something about only having one capacitor connected in the ignition system. i seem to have one hanging off the positive side of the coil, and one on the dizzy. is this correct, or should i yank one off?

lastly, this mystery misfire started IMMEDIATELY after filling up at buladelah. i put premium in (the whole capacity of the tank). could the fuel be dud, or have water in it or something?

thanks alot
james

I was going to suggest dud fuel, though unless you were totally dry when you filled up, it would take a little while for the dud fuel to get to the carby and into the engine.

Smoke and sooty black water out of the exhaust can also be a symptom of dud fuel.

Or a head gasket
