So many cars so little time!
Hi Greg,
LH & LX are identical, UC varies slightly only because it has the "RTS" (Radial Tuned Suspension).
The HQ disc will fit the Torana stub and the HQ Caliper will bolt on to the Torana stub BUT .... to do this the HQ disc needs to be machined down (reduce diameter slightly), it does not reduce the track and will cause problems with the tyres rubbing because of this. The stub axles will "fit" and give you a 1" drop BUT ...... they change the steering geometry 1.5 degrees which causes "bump steer" and uneven tyre wear, so nothing can really be interchanged from HQ to benefit the graft into an FB/EK.
Best way is get some P76 disc and HQ calipers, Hopper Stoppers makes an adapter kit for this setup or you can purchase to complete bolt on setup for around $900 (new discs, spacers, recon' HQ calipers and Caliper mount included). This reduces the track in by 32mm.
Stubtech do a 2" drop spindle for the Torana for about $750/pair.
Advantages over HR frontend:
1/ Very strong wishbones and shock towers.
2/ Rear outriggers, this allows the Torana rack and pinion to fit in the original position with no mods required to the rack or frontend and doesn't look like an "after thought".
3/ Sump clearance is not an issue and also looks like a "factory" install.
4/ Better handling vehicle due to different geometry and design.
Disadvantages (additional work) over HR frontend:
1/ Not available as "changeover" from the likes of CRS, which means you have to do it with consultation with an Engineer or have it done by an Engineering firm (ouch!)
2/ A bit more expensive depending on what you do with the brakes and mount graft. If Torana brakes were used and wheels fitted with an offset to gain guard clearance then it would be a resonably cheap mod.
3/ Mounts need to be fabbed for the rear outrigger mounts.
In summary I believe it is a far better setup and looks like it should be there.
If you want, I can get all the measurements for the notching of the Torana crossmember and mount location to make sure the wheel base and location is right as my fronend will be coming back out shortly for painting
Hope this helps a bit.
