Hr steering set up

Post by minifb »

Hi all, Ive put a new hr front end on "the pig" and when i turn the corner the steerinr linkages(think thats what they call them) hit the sump..I think the main one that goes between them is on backwards..Has any one got a picture of there set up that they can show me please..Cheers Mark

Hi Mark - I've got the exact same thing - the centre drag-link faces the wrong way for an EH sump - on an HR, the "bowl" is located forward whereas on ours it's behind the drag-link.

I spoke to Greg at Holdies on this and apparently it is not a common problem - most who do the conversion do not have the drag-link/bowl clearance problem...... I do not know if it is because Rares located my engine mounts too far to the rear or were not high enough.... I am yet to do some measurements on a later Rares modification to see if they have corrected my problem......

As for the drag-link, I have been told that unfortunately, it is not a case of simply swapping the orientation - the angles for the idler and pit-man arms are wrong if reversed.....

I had considered taking it to a welding specialist and having it reversed but didnt'

I do not know at this stage why it apparently only shows up on some conversions... but have put up with it for twenty-six (26) years....

When I repaired a dent/crack in mine a couple of years back, I removed the lower third of the bowl and welded in a replacement using 3 mm steel.
I fabricated it so that the front problem area sat about 10 mm further away from the drag-link - but be careful as the pick up pipe and screen sit just behind... this was the limit I could take it back.

Another option I found, was to raise the rear trans mount (I fitted a block of steel) and also make sure the engine is mounted as high as possible on the cross-member.

The easy fix is simply to fit the original drag-link assembly - which works fine..... I wanted the HR ball joint assembly hoping that it would afford me better and more consistent steering of my old bus..... it didn't.

Hope some of this helps....

I have thrown this up a few times over the years hoping someone can resolve the issue..... will be watching intently....

frats,

I'll have a look and try and post one up tonight for ya, mine doesnt hit. I'm guessing you've checked the mounts are in the same position as the old front end?

I've always been told you have to use the EH sump for a red motor conversion :? , Trev 8) .

Sump could be the issue, should be the EH one.

I've got EK linkages too Mark and mine clears.

If the mounts are in the same spot and the only thing different is the steering arms there must be some difference then. Maybe change them back?

Mark, mine currently has the HR steering but with the original Grey. It doesn't seem to hit lock to lock, although it hasn't been out on the road yet.

The instructions I have say if using a Red motor, needs to have the EH sump, same as Trev mentioned before. I will probably be doing this also at some stage.

Can you post up some pics of were it actually hits. (A picture or 2 is worth a thousand words) then others could show it not hitting and we would know whats happening.
