1940 Chev Pickup Build Thread

Post by DeadSled »

So just thought i'd start a new thread for my truck seeing as i'm now building it again. Heres some pics / progress so far.

Cab being brought out of storage from my mates Fabrication shop.

One of the doors sanded to bare metal. Has a bit of rust underneath but not much on the front at all.

Image

And in uhh.. "Primer"..

Image

Chassis back from the sandblaster.. and Dad strapping down the ass end.

Image

Image

Sittin in the backyard while i built a Jig / Table for it.

Image

Image

And welded to the Jig / Table after the table was finished.

Now that thats done.. i can do some panel work on the cab and rusty door and in the mean time.. get around to filling out the ASRF membership form and then talkin to a TAC guy because i'm building a tub / tray for it the same length as the cab.. and then cutting out the excess / overhang once the tubs mounted to the chassis.

After thats done i'll be able to get it rolling when the front and rearend get installed.

Might be using the most rearward crossmember if i do a spring over diff rear end.. but if not.. not using any of the original crossmembers. Will be fabricating a X frame with tailshaft loops to go in the middle.

Front end will be a '32 crossmember with a &*#@ style front suspension and an I beam axle. Not sure whether i'll be using split bones, hairpins or a four bar front yet though.

Same with rearend, not 100% if that'll be ladder bars four bar or wishbones.

Oh well. Getting there :D Gotta be done for November. It'll probably be painted with a paintbrush but the inside sprayed, semi gloss black. Black steelies, whitwalls, 5" chop, nice stance and a wicked rubber rake.

All the good traditional aspects 8)

Won't have much in the way of an interior though if i can get away with it. I quite like the bare bones necessities only sorta style of Hot Rod.

Definately won't be a high dollar car either. Oh and.. for anyone whos building in a Carport, Shed or shop.. be glad you aren't building your car where i am. I can barely fit around the mesh fence (We have 6mth old puppies, and don't want them wandering up around the carport) now with the cab on the chassis.

Pics of the cab on the chassis and my shit workspace.

Image

Unfortunately Dad seems to think the front of my Jig is a table to house more of my Brothers shit. My work bench, my Chassis Jig, under my work bench.. all seems to get other peoples shit thrown all over / under it. So annoying..

Image

Pics of Peice of shit Passenger door..

Image

Image

Still gotta put a little filler bit in but haven't done that yet..

Image

Not real happy with how the front rust repair turned out.. needs to be heated and hammered a little. Seriously glad the hard yards of rust repairs on this door is done.. f**king hate rust repairs..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

For some reason the bottom of this panel wouldn't weld very nice.. i bare metalled it but it still welded like shit. Its still just tacks, but had to hold them a little longer otherwise they weren't sticking.

Image

Image

Drivers door. I knew it was pretty mint and well.. it is. Just a bitta rust underneath that'll be piss easy to fix and its all done.

Image

Few little dents and shit.. nothin to worry about.

Image

And thats it. Might have some more pics tomorrow. Gotta hang the pass door and fix that ripped out sill tomorrow or fix the drivers door rust.

Hey Anthony,

All the pics in my EK thread are up to date as far as progress goes. I was considering selling it.. but i don't know yet if my Chev WILL be able to be a daily or not.. i'm hoping it will be but have to see what the TAC guys say..

I'd prefer a 49 - 54 Chev.. so i'd totally swap for one but i don't know about sellin just yet. How much would mine be worth? I've got heaps of spare doors and other shit with it as well.

I am kinda attached to it though  :P

Har har har if it was gona be a bomb it would have a full size tub, full fendered with skirts. Smartass..

Trev yeah it maybe would of if it wassn't such a pos when i bought it. Oh well. This has to be done for November this year and if i'm constantly workin on it a few hours every day or every second day i'm sure it'll get done. No interior, no real paintjob.. just a hell of a lot of fabrication and fiddly shit. Gotta love Hot Rodding 8)
