Hi
i had a trial fit of the sub frame on the wagon
Today and man was it a pain to get on any one
got any tips on bolting them up
do they normally just slide in or are they all
really hard to get into the right spot for bolt up
I don't think there are any real secrets to fitting them up Jay except to make sure the body is level on both planes with the subframe as you line it up.
Years of use may put the original fitment specs out of alignment making it somewhat harder I guess.
Get at least 3 people and it goes on easy as! Well easier...
Still requires a bit of holding your tongue a certain way if you know what I mean. As terry said make sure its all roughly the same height wise to start with.
Speed and Style........... One day I'll get the speed bit.
dont tighten a bolt till there all started ,,,,you can flex it alot with out hurting it ,poggy or pinch bars will help you twist it to line up,, and grease you elbows
when they start building them like that again i will buy a new car of them
Nascohunter on this site has made up some bullet shaped nuts that you put on the bolts that make it easy to put them through the holes and lines it up, you just knock them through then undo them and put the original nuts on, very clever I thought. The only problem is he told me about them after I had put my sub frame back on so I didn't get to use them , Trev .[/i]

And old fella once told me yonks ago that if I ever took it off to make sure the firwall was treated and given a good coating of some sealer.
Don't know what to suggest, but someone will.
thanks for the info so far guys
the worst thing is i need to take it off again
as this was just a trail fit up
i had to rebuild the area where it bolts up to the
front corner of the sill so needed to check it was
going to fit it fits but its very tight
Yep, another good idea Karsten about not doing all the bolts up tight until they are all in and Dee, the old bloke is right, one of the hardest areas to treat and keep the rust away is where the firewall end of the inner skirts bolts up to the outer areas of the firewall.
Best to cut out any rust and treat with heaps of whatever rust preventative you choose in that area whilst subframe is off.
As is said above , it's a pain in the arse to have to pull off again .
Another thing I found a long time ago. If you have done a lot of repairs on the front of the subframes (area where the bumper bolts up too) it can pull out of shape when welded and end up twisting and being a real pain in the ass to fit also.
i've been told where the dificulty lies is the subframes are loaded from the factory i.e. they have everything front cross member, engine gearbox all that stuff already bolted in place which also alters it's boltup placement
I'm a bit late with this one...you've probably got it worked out.
I have had to trial fit mine in order to rebuild the bottom corners too. We found it easier to bolt the top of the subframe up starting at the firewall and then the y frames lined up a lot easier...but still had a good fight on our hands though. We used a screwdriver to line up the holes and hammer to 'encourage' the bolts through...
