Rear Axle

G'day everyone,

How do I remove the rear axle? I'm assuming you have to do this to be able to remove the brake backing plate?

There are 4 bolts that hold it on to the flange, remove the wheel and drum break set up to reveal these 4 bolts, undo them and pull the axle out, Trev 8) .

Stewart,

In addition to what Trev's said,

You'll will most likely need an axle puller to pull it out as well.It's basically a slide hammer that bolts to the axle wheel studs using the wheel nuts.

Or alternatively if you have an old rear wheel drum you could bolt it to the axle in the reversed manner that the wheel drum normally goes on and then whack the drum with a large hammer( making sure to not hit the brake components).

Use an old wheel drum however as this method will bend the wheel drum mounting face and stuff the wheel drum.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

Hey Stewart remove the retaining nuts at the rear of the backing plate (after the drum) then remove the axle probably need to use a puller (super cheap or home made will do)

Dont forget to remove the 2 half moon spacers behind the backing plate, they retain the axle ...

I learnt the hard way.. :oops: :oops:

Yep, correct strogger, and they are a pain in the arse to line back up again when refitting :evil: :evil: :evil:

I have got all the nuts and bolts out...there is no way that I can get the axle out...looks like I need a puller or use Terrys suggestion...

Gday Stewart

The EH HR diffs just need the four axle retaining bolts removed.

A FB EK diff as strogger & FB MAD pointed out has additional retaining plates behiend the backing plate.

Stew, Just use the drum as the slide hammer. Reverse the drum as Terry mentioned and screw the wheel nuts on a couple of threads and pull the drum hard towards you, keep compounding the action until the axle comes loose, make sure before you do it though you remove the half moon locating dics as Strogger mentioned.

OK...decided to keep my dollars and use the drum suggestion...but instead of using a drum I used a spare rim...

It popped out with ease...after I tied the diff off to the pool fence...

next plan is to de-rust and repaint all the brake components...

do I need some sort of hi-temp paint...?

Doesn't matter how you got the axles out Stewart as long as it worked and didn't pull your pool fence down either :lol: :lol: :lol: .

No paint expert here, but after derusting I'd clean all traces of oil/grease/dirt whatever from the parts to be painted and then spray a coat of High Temp Primer and then a couple of coats of High Temp Paint.

As brakes do get hot in use I would only use High Temp paint and not ordinary Enamel.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.
