Try LC/LJ Torana diff assembly. There is mention of it somewhere ( I think) as it is a bit shorter than FB/EK diff housing.

I'll leave the rest of the info to those here who have done it.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

I would stick to a HR diff, the old banjo can take a fair bit, and there cheep to replace anyway (compared to your 9inch), unless money no option  , Trev 8) .

Yep,

I've had red motor 2.78 banjo in a HQ 308/T400 no problems, even used 6 cyl rear uni joint ( not V8 uni joint).

Also 253/Trimatic in a UC Torana with red motor banjo 2.78 gears fitted in the UC Salisbury diff ( banjo and UC salisbury gears will interchange) again, no problems.

Didn't abuse them ( read old farts speed here) and never had a problem with them.

Anything is breakable given enough stresses beyond engineered capability but the old banjo centre, like Trev said, will take a bit more than people think.

FB/EK's are relatively light bodied ( close to the same weight as LC/LJ Torana) and this helps as well.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

Quite a few Malcolm as far as I know.

Forum member Dr Terry would know what model they first brought the 2.78 ratio out in.

From memory they were an optional ratio in LC/LJ Torana's and possibly HT and HG as well I guess.Happy to be corrected if this isn't right.

Not sure how long the 2.78 option ran for but again Dr Terry would know.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.
