trip stats
For those who have received this in an email............. this is a repeat.
Our trip data statistics
Just did the fuel/distance figures – amazing!
Exact figures were
Mooroolbark to Yamba via Benalla, Albury, Goulburn M7, M3 & F2 freeways (Sydney), Newcastle, Coffs Harbour to Yamba =
983 miles (1582 km) exact.
Fuel 36.544 gallons (166.13 litres) average 28.185 mpg
Best 30.02 mpg (Coffs Harbour – Yamba)
Day 1 Mooroolbark – Raymond Terrace
1050 km
12 hr 05 min moving
Moving average 79.6 km/h
Max speed – 121 km/h
Day 2 Raymond Terrace – Yamba
532 km
6 hr 40 moving
Moving average 79.8 km/h
Max speed 116 km/h
Ex Yamba via Coffs Harbour, Ebor, Tamworth, Dubbo, Narrandera, Tocumwal, Shepparton, Seymour, Yea to Mooroolbark =
1016.5 miles (1645 km)
Fuel 37.525 gallons (170.59 litres) average 28.520 mpg
Best 30.45 mpg (Shepparton – Mooroolbark)
Day 1 Yamba – Forbes
964 km
11 hr 34 min moving
Moving average 83.2 km/h
Max speed 139.2 km/h
Day 2 Forbes – Mooroolbark
681.71 km
7 hr 43 min moving
Moving average 88.2 km/h
Max speed 131.7 km/h
So – for all the planning and debate – there would appear little difference between the Newell vs Hume
– fuel vs distance vs time almost identical…..
18 hours 45 min moving outbound via Hume………………..(and roadworks)
19 hours 17 min moving inbound via Newell
63 km further via return
Less than 1 gallon (4.546 litres) difference in cost.
We felt the return trip via Newell more relaxing – although the trip up through the mountains to Ebor was breathtaking.
Outbound trip to Yamba was a series of incessant breaks in journey by road-works……………… would probably prove to be quicker if not for these perpetual nuisances………
Frats,
Rosco
Ps max speeds were momentary (less than 1 km on undivided road) whilst overtaking “strings” of vans and slower moving traffic – speed was contained to within 2-3 km/h of limits using GPS and Navman as references.

Thought I'd throw in my fuel figures although they aren't as technical or based over a longer milage than Rosco's it all has some relevence.
I'm running a 149 although it's been bored to 167 cubes so I suppose these figures could be classified as fuel figures for a 161.
Stock standard engine,138 red motor carb, original 3 speed crash box ( and it is.... it crashes in all gears
) and running a 3.08 : 1 red motor diff centre.
Yamba to Tamworth via Nymboida, Ebor and Armidale.
236 miles (approx)
7.69 gallons used ( 35 litres approx)
10.85 litres per 100 klm's (approx)
30.5 miles to the gallon ( approx)
I'm pretty happy with that and the drive was fairly mountainous for a great deal of time.

I can't think what to write here so this will do.
Just to clear something up Ady, Rosco is running a 179 and 4 speed manual, TrevAdy wrote:Cheers for the great info Rosco , very interesting . I had been wondering what consuption to expect from an FB/EK . Am I right with my conversion 28.5 mpg = 10.03 km per litre

Should clear it up a bit more Trev..............
179 HP block bored to 192, recently re-conditioned head (unleaded exhaust valve seats and 12 new valves) 4 sp M 20 Aus box, 3:08 diff and Lumenition laser beam ignition...........
best ever was back in 1983 - 32.3 mpg over 148 miles (strict 50 mph "easing" over hills and using vacuum gauge staying over 10" vacuum), tyres inflated to 35 psi
- guess o/a average above 28 point something is still very good considering the hammering I gave it to and fro fully loaded.......................
Do NOT want to pull the engine/trans out to fix that oil pressure (down to 200 kPa ((28 psi)) when worked hard and gets oil hot) and rear seal (drips about 10x after turning engine off when hot) issues, but will do - it is beginning to upset me along with that blasted rattle we can't find...................(starting to believe the rattle is cam bearing related) ............ but with these fuel figures, there can't be much wrong.................
Had a very good look at the front l/hs yesterday - can't find anything amiss - guess Lesley and Roger were right - too much wax for the 'roo to get any purchase on the panels..............
Cleaned up the brite-wear yesterday - will "clay" and wax the rest over the weekend....................too cold to work out in the garage today - snow in the hills down here....................any in Yamba?

Hi Ady,
just did some figures to get formulae calculations for you.
28.5 mpg calculates to 9.9135 litres/100 km using my formulae............
I often find it difficult to associate reference figures when discussing fuel consumption.
For those interested my understandings are as follows......
MPG (which is what I use) is simply miles divided by gallons - to get these using metric figures......
The miles on your speedo are simply divided by the fuel used - this of course is now in litres - to get gallons - divide the litres by 4.546 then divide your mileage by the resulting gallons = mpg.
to get kilometres per litre - multiply your speedo miles by 1.609 = km/s
divide this by fuel used gives km/s per litre................
This would equate to your 28.5 multiplied by 1.609 = 45.8565
our gallon multiplied by 4.546 is litres
our 45.8565 km divided by our 4.546 litres = 10.0872 km's per litre (you're very close).
now for the tricky one - litres per 100 km =
multiply your speedo miles by 1.609 = km's
divide 100 by these km's then mulitlply by the lires used - this gives you litres per 100 km.......................
for example...
your mileage of 28.5 mpg is calculated thus.....
28.5 x 1.609 = 45.8565 (km's)
1 gallon = 4.546 (litres)
the formula
100 divided by 45.8565 (km) = 2.1807 then multiplied by 4.546 (litres used) = 9.9135 litres per 100 km
If I am errant in my formulae or calculations please enlighten.....

Hi Terry,
very much chuffed to finally catch up with you - pity it didn't happen when you were down in my neighbourhood - and even more chuffed you considered our health a higher priority.......
I have to admit - if your FB had the grey - I would have been very tempted to give it full marks for original - I am over-awed by your car, I love these personalities and the life/history they have enjoyed - thankyou for giving me the opportunity to look over her...............
Your figures are very good...............
I applied my calcs and got the following
236 miles = 379.724 km/s divided by your 35 litres = 10.849 km's per litres.
100 divided by 379.724 = 0.263349169 multiplied by 35 = 9.217221 litres per 100 km.................

Finally happy to meet you and your family Rosco.
You definately have one, well looked after! sedan. With the best looking Boot and engine bay in Victoria. I reckon there is way to much wax and polish on your car for bugs to stick to your car, let alone Kangaroos......
Regards John

Thanks John,
wore a lot of the shine off on the way back............. but like yourself - home safe.
Guess Mr Meguiar was counting on my return - haven't applied much to it yet - still going over the mechanicals after the trip.......... made a list of "thinkgs to do" during the trip back.......... Bendigo is only around the 180 km from here - but as you well know - things can go amiss just geting out of the driveway.........
Guess that roo made a good buff for the f l/hs - hope it has recovered (no pun intended)

Not in our eyes (or ears).............. J & M
have to think back to when we were kids, I suppose - I used to joust a lot with my elder sister - but my parents were always (told much later in life) never concerned about our behavior in company........... always complimented on our manners and "seen but not heard" or speak when spoken to" bringing up............. guess I'm off the chain now......... and don't i like to type.................
all kids have to be allowed to be kids................
And some older ones too..............

I was only having a similar conversation with another, and mentioned to him that, riding a bike on the road...is now a sin. To allow your kids to climb the highest tree is taboo.. To climb on the roof of your house is not allowed
The one thing we don't let our kids do is play till after dark and go somewhere without telling us, I myself used to do the opposite....come home just before dinner or bedtime and miss out on dinner altogether, and always went off without telling someone.
Maybe the old days no one used to care as much as we do now, or is it that we are more protective.
