Fuel tank leak

Post by Malcolm »

Don't you just hate it when you've nearly finished your rebuild and your just starting to fit out the trim in the boot when you think, shit I've cut the crap out of this tank to get it to fit so maybe I better throw some fuel in it to check for leaks before finishing the fitout.
Although prior to painting I pressure tested the tank to check the welds the best I could with what I had.
Anyway after pouring in the first 50litres and constantly checking the underside of the tank for leaks, all is looking good :D when you look inside the boot just to see       the spare wheel area slowly filling with fuel.

As it turns out there is a pinhole in the top of the tank where the spare tyre sits. I initally stripped all the paint off the tank and saw the slight skale rust on the top and cleaned it up. All looked ok with that. Didn't even think to check that area when I was leak testing due to being so concerned with my welded repairs.

O well as they say shit happens.

Hey Mal,
The old hole in the tank trick hey?
I meant to ask you about this cause I was looking at the diff today and thought that may just hit the tank before the bump stops.
Is this the place you modified? If you have posted allready I may have missed it.
Dont worry about a little thing like the leak its just there to test your resilience.
Regards Greg

Fuel tank leak

Post by Malcolm »

Karsten,

My exhaust is twin 3 inch from the extractors to the rear bumper including 3 inch cat converters and mufflers.

Greg,

Yes, the center of the diff on mine was hitting on the front of the tank so I recessed that area of the tank about an inch. You can't go much further before you hit the spare wheel area of the tank. Also I cut the corners off the front of mine so as to get the exhaust through.

Mark,

I am having thoughts of using some form of putty or something to fill the hole and then fill it with fuel again to see if there are any more problem areas. If so I will pull the tank out and run some tank seal of some kind in it. Can you tell me more about the POR15 :?:

Hi Malcolm,
sorry I didn't get to this earlier - been off the "wire" for a couple of days.....

POR 15 - they make a tank repair kit - don't kow if you feel it warranted - it consists of a few "goodies" to treat the the tank..............

This is the promo......

4 litres of Marine Clean - cleans tank
1 litre Metal Ready - preps tank
1 litre US standard Fuel Tank Sealer - seals tank
Repair material for small holes/leaks......
Detailed instructions.......

Features.....

Cleanes all sludge, gum and varnish from within the tank
Removes rust, preps inside the tank with sinc phospate for added adhesion.
Seales with anon porous coating.
Compatible with all fuels.
Remains flexible.

This will leave a hard ceramic like coating over the inside of your tank.
For a lot less than buying another tank - you can re-new your old rusty tank and stop rust and gum blocking up jet
s and filters.......

there is an 1800 number - 1800 643 229

or

at www.por15.com.au

PPC (Aus dealer) are at Unit 1, 4 Prosperity Parade
Warriewood

They are advertising this kit at $196

fuel tank leal

Post by Malcolm »

Rosco, thanks for the info. I just used some metal type putty today and will refill the tank tomorrow and see if it works OK. If I still have problems I intend pulling the tank out and sealing the inside. The POR product sounds just like what I was looking for.

Thanks

Mal

I only stumbled onto this range a month or so back - I have now used many of them and found them to be excellent - PROVIDING !!! you follow the instructions, EXACTLY.........

A good drain, dry and blow out with air for 15 minutes then weld up the hole is always an option - $196 is a lot of money for a pin hole - but you get the comfort of knowing the inside of the tank is "coated"........

frats,
