I missed out on going through that place when we were in Cooma after the Nationals - it was either Flynns wrecking yard or that place on the Tuesday arvo and the other on the Wednesday morning - we did Flynn's on the Tuesday and the boss and I took off early on the Wednesday to express freight it to Coffin Bay so we didn't get to go through it. :?
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

A question for red motor experts. What brand of extractors are best suited to a worked head, mild cam 186 in EK?

I am toying with swapping from headers, which are doing a good job, but are restricting exhaust a little I'm feeling.

Tuned length, long primaries for a town car, short primaries for highway.

Though I’m not a fan of extractors due to previous bad experience, the ones on Elle’s sedan seem to display no bad habits. They are 12 port and I’m not sure they are still available in any case. They fit in the engine bay well, apart from being slightly clearanced near the idler arm pivot. Lukey brand.Image

When I got a set of Genie pipes fitted to my old EK back in 1987 the local shop chose an EH style set and had a bugger of a time fitting them, having to modify the rear primary to clear the firewall. They made changing the starter motor extremely difficult, requiring removal of the solenoid to get it in and out. To top it off they made an annoying tink tink sound in the cabin. No doubt they improved performance over the stock manifold, and the 2” exhaust and sporty muffler made them sound ok. Eventually they cracked and leaked, but that after many miles.

I sold a pacemaker set to a friend a few years ago and he commented that the primaries looked a bit narrow. I’ve seen a formula somewhere also, for the optimum length and size of the secondaries. The exhaust on Elle’s car is 2 1/4”. Works well and sounds great. It is a 202 though, snd also has a resonator, or hot dog. The local guy almost baulked at fitting even a 2” to the ute with 179, until his more learned mate told him it would be fine. In hindsight I would go the 2 1/4” next time, with long secondaries, ending just short of the muffler. If you want expert advice, try the Torana forum, though they won’t be any help with how they fit in the engine bay.

On a street car I would go with a tri-Y arrangement. Off the shelf I think 1 5/8" are about the biggest on offer. The pipes on the red rattler are 1 3/4" primaries and they are a pain in the arse to install/remove.

I’ve heard good reports of the HM6(?) style. They are based on the EFI 202 black factory design, only suit 9 port. They are two into three into one setup instead of three into two into one. The problem is with having three secondary pipes instead of two, clearance to the subframe rail is going to be a stopper.

Hey Brett,
as they were handy I grabbed a picture of the extractors that were on my 202.

Quick measurement and conversion to inches - 1 3/8" primaries, 1 3/4 secondaries, 2" exhaust.

Search on google - Wildcat Headers (WILD022) seem to be close but have a slightly larger 1.5" primary. Then if you like to throw money at it there is Pacemaker PH5004 Kit EH-WB. Interesting too (well I thought it was as I have never really looked too deeply into tuned extractors), check out PH 5013 HK-HZ Red Motor Competition Header. It won't fit in a EK/FB engine bay, but those are some long primary pipes.

Thanks gents. Lots of info there. I was thinking that the Pacemaker PH5004 was a likely contender, but really need to hear from someone who has one fitted to an EK with CRS chassis rail strengthening kit. Dont want to fork out and find I have to change the shape of it to get it to fit.

Refilled the ute today. Fuel consumption in old school figures for the Cooma run worked out at 26mpg. Highway drive all the way. Warm 186 with Holley 350, for those questioning the potential economy of a Holley.
