Good to catch up with you again Harv. That was my spare engine which was replacement for the one I broke the crank in at Warwick the previous weekend at the Six Banger Nats. For those that don't know, I won the Stick- Shift bracket and when doing a run for the Champion for the day the crank broke when I launched.
The spare engine was installed for the Bangers and Mash day at Sydney and was running shithouse at the start of the day with the clutch playing silly buggers as well. My theory is, don't tinker with it, just flog it.
I ended up in the final with a bloke from Adelaide who unfortunately broke his throttle cable on launch so I got the win. I'd dialled 14.5 and ran 14.5's for the Chicago shootout and a 14.54 in the final.
Grey motor does it again.

Just an update on the engine that expired at the Six Banger nats. Not only did I break the crank but bent no.6 conrod and busted the bottom off the forged piston. Bearings are shot as well. I have one race left this year at Gunnedah 1st November and hopefully the spare engine will stay together for the weekend. We race both days so it needs to survive for about 14 runs.

Bugger  any pics ? Was it just a fatigue failure or did you zing it or run out of oil pressure or something ??

Ouch. :(

I've got some spare rods if you need one. I guess SPS will make up just a single forged slug. Did it do any damage to the bore?

Thanks Harv. I don't think the bore got damaged but I'm planning on getting another block bored and starting fresh. I've got some spare EJ rods and I'm going to see if Kevin Pryce in Cardiff, NSW can source another full set of forged pistons from the U.S.A. He got the last set for me and they were cheaper and better quality than the cast ones from J.P..
I haven't got any photos yet but as soon as I do I'll post them.

What's the secret to posting photos? Just remember, as a computer operator I make a great truck driver.

The FB/EK forum is not bad for posting photos, as it will accept large ones. I work off a laptop, so I save my photos to the desktop somewhere. I write my post, then down below where I am typing I click the Attachments tab. It gives me a small button that says Add FIles. Select the photo file from the desktop, and it loads them up. Once they are loaded, I click Place Inline, and it adds them to my post.

Cheers,

Photos worked out good,

When an engine lets go it does extreme damage, usually scrap metal for most.

I still remember when my trusty 186 let go, crank broke, 2 pistons out the side of the sump and block, counter weights hit the camshaft and sent it out the side which took out the alternator. Head scored and valves all bent. The only thing that survived was the starter motor and water pump, no more reds after that !!!!!
