Steel timing gear for a EK grey motor

Where is the best place to buy the timing gears in steel or maybe alloy? Which is the best set to buy?

The table weighing up the pros and cons is still correct.

Most of the steel gears being flogged by resellers appear to be the Speco MFXCAM units. I've used them before (and am about to put one into Grace's ute), though others have found significant backlash issues with them (can't remember if it was Craig or Greg?).

JP still do the alloy gears (JP5986 alloy).

To the best of my knowledge, Master don't do the gear sets anymore. I have not touched base with Diecrest.

My backlash problem was due to the gear being flogged out from crank vibrations after running one of those crap Durabond balancers on the grey.

While we're on the subject, I have a new alloy gear to go on the rebuilt motor in the Ute, but no crank gear with it. I have two crank gears which have done many miles in stock engines with fibre gears, one of which fibre gears did fail. They look fine to my somewhat myopic eyes. Should I replace or should the used ones be ok? This is a red motor by the way.

I would have said reuse the crank gear.

Some people like a "matched set", but for most uses the old gear will be fine.

If it's for a red motor, definitely replace the crank gear as well. Not because of any wear-related problems, but because red motor timing gear sets are as cheap as chips compared with grey.

Thanks fellas. I picked up the cam gear and seal for $10 on Gumtree. I'll price a crank gear.

I just rang die crest and their gear sets are $440 + postage... also they only do straight cut gears.
So yes it seems pricey and I'm unsure about what straight cut will be like.

Found this option on ebay with Resto Country for $199 + postage... helical cut timing gear only, no matching crank gear.

I rang Resto Country and they said it is a Speco VHT brand timing gear...

How does that sound to you guys, would you buy it?

I'd buy the helical cut timing gear on its own. You don't need to replace the crank gear, and only need straight-cuts if you are chasing every poofteenth of power out of the thing (or love driveline chatter).

Hunt round for the best price on the steel gear.

I have just purchased a complete Master set with Iron Cam gear Steel Crank Gear double lip seal and thrust plate NIB.
Are they any good?
Or are the JP Alloy gear sets better?

I like how the Crank gear has 3 keyways so the Cam can be advanced or retarded, not sure how many degrees.

Any thoughts

I’ve never heard of a Master Engineering steel set let go. I have heard of the steel centre tearing out of some of the alloy ones.

I did hear sometimes they are noisy to start off but usually quieten down within 12 months.
I will use it for my J motor build.
It was under half of the price of an Alloy set.
