Surely you are having a lend of us here Blacky. That is a total crock.Blacky wrote: Wed Dec 13, 2023 12:10 am I normally just bung an airline down the dipstick tube , give it a burst of air while turning it over and voila - oil pressure![]()

Given the dip stick tube is open to the crankcase, I dont think so. Maybe you would blow oil everywhere inside but need convincing that method pressurises anything.

Re: Clay’s Wedgewood Blue FB Ute
It could work if you stuff the rocker cover breather with rag. You would not need the full 9 bar of compressor pressure... just a smidgen of air to get over the lack of NPSH.

Re: Clay’s Wedgewood Blue FB Ute
Google it mate - its a widely used method , I have been doing it since my speedway days 30 years ago . 15PSI is enough to pressurise the bottom end enough to force the oil up the feed pipe to the pump for initial startup. The bottom end is sealed via the rings so the oil has nowhere else to go except into the pump.

Re: Clay’s Wedgewood Blue FB Ute
I wish i new that trick about 6 months ago as i had a priming tool lent to me that fitted a battery drill ,went through two batterys before i got oil presure up the top,not to mention the angle that V8 have to get two the pump drive

Re: Clay’s Wedgewood Blue FB Ute
Probably work good if you had a sacrificial oil filter and stuck a hole on the top side so the air in the system has somewhere to exit..

Yep, it works, seen it done.
My prefered method is vaseline in the oil pump gears, with the spark plugs out crank it over till you can see some pressure.

Re: Clay’s Wedgewood Blue FB Ute
The bottom end is not sealed by the rings at all. The oil pathways in the head that let the rocker oil seep back to the sump make the sump open to any breather tube or rocker cover breather. As Harv says you would have to fully seal the engine and even then it would be a very inefficient method to get oil into the oil pump.
Happy for everyone to do whatever they want to their engines. My own method is to use an external oil pump piped into the oil gallery to get oul pressure to rockers and it works just fine. If you want to blow air in an open hole that's fine too.
