hi my current project has a 186 s she runs ok but need a freshen up.. now do i rebuild or get a 202 to rebuild .. ?

which is the best motor .. performance and fuel wise

Hi Dave,
not that I have any experience with 202's but just thinking down the road a number of years................

Cranks, as far as I know, are interchangeable except for 202 - I believe they are a longer stroke............

May not mean much at present, but if you have to chase something up later on, you may find it easier...............

Many of us have 179/186 and find them an overall good performer - both in power and economy......

Gents,
202 has a large journal main and is a different block to the older reds (journal size) and webbing.
My personal view is that a good 186 is perfect for the power to weight ratio of the FB/EK.
The 202 however is a stronger engine if you want to work it hard.
Power however does come at a price and that is fuel consumption.
You have to work out what exactly do you want to do with the car, every day driver a cruiser or a part time racer?
Go the 186 cause you allready have it.

I had a Qie ute with a 202 with a 186 head that went like a train & economy was'nt as thirsty as a standard one. :?
Just another option to think about.

I had a 202 with a 138 head :shock: :shock: , fuel economy?!?!?! I had more trouble running it on petrol than worrying about economy :lol: :lol: :lol:

But geez it was fun! Just ask the guy with the SBC powered HQ. I was beside him all gearchanges, should have seen his face as I was still running an EH crash box column shift and all! :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: Although 120mph was it....ran out of legs.

My FC ran a worked 186 which I found to be smoother, both engines had been balanced.

well personal opinion i'd go blue 202 but isn't the limit for a ek without engineer certificate a 192 or something like that anyways ? that being the case the 186 would be better....

sammy from my understanding it need to be engineered for the 138 and brake mods hr disk .. so 186 202 0or v8 it still needs to be done

hmm she is only going to be a cruzer . but will need to have head done for unleaded .. and may as well balance it and cam it to. . just make it a little sweeter ..

4 now i drop the old 186 in and keep my eyes open for a bargin .. i hope ..

202 has 3 1/4 inch stroke whereas 186 and all smaller reds have 3 inch stroke.This makes the 202 a more torquey motor than 186 but at a price.It's high revability ( in standard form ) is limited compared to the 3 inch stroke reds due to the increased piston speed at a given rpm than the other shorter stroke motors would have to contend with.

Thats usually why most blokes consider the 202 to be a slug compared to 186,it's all in the stroke.

Grey motors had 3 1/8th inch stroke.



Beef up a 202 with performance mods for better reliability and they go very well.If your after high RPM then a 186 would be better due to shorter stroke.

Depends on what you want the motor to do.

Most bloke go for the 186.
