You want a noice smooth surface for the bead to seal on. Just saying, you probably know this. As they cop a beating they are usually coated with something durable, powdercoat, urethane 2k or enamel.

Thanks Blacky, Clay. Putting tubes in these old rims. There is too much pitting and unevenness for tubeless to work.
Dates show four 1960 and one 1961.
Treated for rust and etch primed and now waiting for primer to dry. Decided that as there was 1 layer of black on back of rims, that I would paint Artic Beige on front and black on back. Black first and Arctic Beige overspray on band as per how I found them. A bit harder to do than straight colour over whole rim but period correct I think. Staying with acrylic lacquer because it is easy, matches car colour and can be touched up easily as needed over the next 60 years.

Too cold to do much today. But pulled out that slightly grooved steering arm that was discussed here many posts ago and replaced with NOS arm that I was lucky to pick up a few months back. Then fitted draglink assembly on to car. Steering should be nice and tight with all the new bits. Feels like some progress to have it back on.

Will keep warm doing mechanical stuff this week I think. Next jobs putting bits back on motor and then motor and gearbox together again.

Xmas (maybe). There are some 17°C days coming up at the end of the week and into weekend. That will probably be my last chance to finish bonnet and ashtray and glovebox lids in yellow, front seat trim in Scarab Green and Arctic Beige wheel fronts under lights. Fingers crossed.

Mucking about fitting alternator, fuel lines and vacuum advance line between domestic duties.
Question without notice: is the vacuum line one piece of pipe or does it have a plastic joiner near the distributor advance connection. All mine have been cut and have plastic hose between pieces. Presumably to make it easier to adjust timing than with a complete pipe? Need to make one tomorrow anyway- so one piece or two?

From memory, EJ onwards have a different vac advance module with a nipple-and-hose setup. Rob will know for certain.

My Dads original FB has the one piece vac line, which requires some careful pipe tweaking/adjustment after setting the timing to enable the reconnection at the dizzy.

'Ebay specials' Stephen. The bender is nice and easy, the flair tool takes a bit of mucking about as it tends to try and move off-centre if you don't check it.

Going to try and finish wheels off now. Too much going on at once.

Odd job day. Wheels finished, clutch and flywheel sorted, motor ready to attach to gearbox ( or vice versa).
