eh radio noise

hi holden fans, my mate has an eh holden and has just fitted a cd player but when its turned on and the engine is running it makes a buzzing sound through the speakers, we've tried putting in a noise filter on the power line but it hasnt made any difference. does anyone have a fix for this problem?

try a new earth point ie to the body internally. or even obtaining power from a different section (normally direct from the battery is easiest).

sound sytems noises.........hmm - can be a number of things.

We need to know more about what the noise is:-

Does it speed up with engine revs?

Don't jump to any conclusions, just work your way through what you know and what has changed.

Did this noise happen with the previous "system" and does it indeed still have an original "factory" radio fitted which doesn't suffer the noise?

Most people jump on ignition - it may not necessarily be the problem, just the source of the noise.
- most leads these days are silicone and should not be the problem.
- I don't know how many "spare" sets I have bought over the years (tape players, CB radios, CD players etc) only to find it didn't fix anything..........

Retro is probably correct in believing you may have power supply/earth issue.

Does this noise occur in all unit modes - radio, cd etc............?

For supply/earth faults....
There are usually two supplies to most CD units - one which is permanent battery "on" and the other accessory only - "switched".
For testing purposes, it won't matter to temporarily connect these to the battery direct - but use fuses on both leads to protect the unit.

I would suggest checking earth connections - it may just be finding it through the chassis of the unit and its cradle - there should be a small bolt on the rear of the unit which must get a good earth to the vehicle body.
I have had this one before - make sure the screw/bolt/nut etc you use for this earth makes a 100% clean and shiny contact with the vehicle body.
Also check the connecting terminals of the earth lead - won't hurt to beef up the wire a bit - some manufacturers supply a thin piece of kid's wire - I do the "Tim the Tool-man - you remember - Binford tools" trick with most of my wiring - you don't need to go jumper lead, but something with a dozen or so strands instead of the four/six as supplied.

Does the system employ a separate amplifier - and if so where is power to this amplifier taken from and how is it earthed?

How have the speakers been connected?.......... I hope two separate leads were used to each speaker and didn't connect the negative speaker terminal to the body?

These are just a few options - the immediate ones which come to mind - there are more but we need a bit more information to investigate...........

Tell us the answers to the above - and please inform the group if you find the cause in the meantime...........

If the noise is still there, tell him it may be a common fault with these new cars, and he should scrap it and buy a superior fb/ek model....

thanks for the advice guys, im going to try all of the suggested fixes. rosco,yes it does speed up with engine revs and it does it in all modes
hi reto, havent had a chance yet, been cruising a lot lately in hot-rods and fb/ek's ah thats the life!
will have another go after new year hangovers.

Like Rosco said most plug leads these days are suppressed but check them anyway it takes 2 seconds I recently installed an mp3 in mine and it went crazy I checked the plug leads and they were solid copper core I replaced them with a set of suppressed leads and all is good
