3500 miles clocked up now since being put back on the road. This stop was at Flaggy Creek on the way to Mt Taylor Vic. Looking north to the Dargo High Plains.

Looks like you're subjecting her to the conditions she was made for Craig. Living the dream.

Re: Seagull Grey EK 2106
Thanks Errol and Brett.
We're having a ball......well really its probably just me having the ball.
Had to redo the wheel alignment with a touch more toe in as it was wandering slightly but had a wicked oversteer problem when you turned into a bend. Now its much better and a less work to keep on the straight and narrow. Belinda's now been getting some wheel time as well in prep for Perth and is happy the way it steers.
Will be getting the bench seat sorted next as the spring work and padding is stuffed. Not sure about getting a sacrificial seat done and keep this one hung up in the shed as the trim is in good nick and has no tears or splits.

Re: Seagull Grey EK 2106
Back to Dargo again with the camper. Great weekend but yet another set back. Gearbox now noisy in first and second. Sounds like layshaft. Made it home ok but the whole lot will have to come out. Hoping there's not too much damage and hoping the Rares bearing kit hasn't let me down. This box was so clean inside and showed little to no wear. Did a bearing changeout as a preventative measure which hasn't lasted. Not having much of a win lately. Excessive oil from the breather pipe is still an issue. Work continues

What a bugger Craig - hope it is nothing serious - those hills around Dargo would certainly test it out thats for sure - we play up that way a bit in the cruisers and they love it but thats with 4wd box - 4.56 ratios - 35's and 200kw pulling them around LOL.
I had my box pulled apart by Barry at dinkum auto's - one shaft in mine was badly worn and it had a rares kit in it - he mentioned something about the needle bearings were the wrong size but not sure if that was the rares kit was poor or just the wrong choice from the previous guy that worked on it - not sure what he replaced with but might be worth an enquiry.

Thanks Stewart and Wally. I'll be doing a detailed strip down and inspection of all parts. Strangley my noisy spigot bush has been quiet, seems somenthing else went out in sympathy haha. Oh the joys of motoring! Better now than Tassie, or worse on the Nullabor!

Out again. Stripped box down and not happy. Needle rollers between Main and input shaft have failed (Brinelled). Both shafts are stuffed.
NOS mainshaft I have looks to be EJ/EH as is too long by an inch. Now scrounging 5 spare boxes. Pictures tomorrow.

I suppose one thing is its good to find this stuff out now rather than when you are out in the middle of nowhere ....

I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Re: Seagull Grey EK 2106
Sounds exactly like what happened to mine Craig - apparently there are a few bearing kits out there that are close but not quite the right size and have been sold off as EK. Cost me a main shaft as well.

Re: Seagull Grey EK 2106
Thanks Guys.
Well its all back in today and running. Scrounged a good mainshaft from a spare box. Interestingly I thought I'd start with checking later boxes first thinking they had done less work. Both "B" serial number boxes were damaged much the same way. My "L" number box was in good nick. So to me it seems it could have load related or bad parts that caused the failure. I have to say that the rollers are in a bad spot as they would see very little oil due to being stuck inside the input shaft and having only two holes to allow some splash to get in the area. The shafts also sit above the oil level which wouldn't help.
While it was out I decided to run it with the side plate off to see why I was having a bit of oil leakge from the draft tube. My thought was oil was being sprayed up from No2 conrod squirter via the oil return hole above the camshaft. Not much oil appeared in the area. Did a small mod to the side plate to allow a little better oil drainage behind the baffle plate. Hope fully thats it.
Wally I measured up the old rollers and some originals and I could see much difference although I'd reckon the failed ones had worn a bit )apart from the brinelling. I guess and extra .001 in diameter on each roller would add up over all 13 of them. Not much room for error there.

Posted on Farcebook if you haven't seen it, another trip down but not without drama. To massive blowouts on the LHR and a stinking hot day. Good news is the gearbox seems to be ok now!
