Welded on Harmonic Balancer

Post by Tasek »

I am wondering if someone can suggest a method of removing a Harmonic Balance pulley that some numbnut has welded solidly to the crankshaft.
The pulley seems in good shape and I would like to save it if possible. If that isn't an option I don't want to damage the crank. I am a fitter and using a gas ax was my first thought but that just could have been the temper talking.

I have a pulley puller but obviously not going to do the job as there is a bead of weld.

I purchased this motor as part of a disassembled ute and have found that the head is cracked so I want to know what else is to be replaced. (since bought an EJ grey motor which I will strip down if this one has too many issues) But I need to know what I have before making the call.

Any and all advice (other than whack in a Red ) welcome

all I can think of is a 5" hand held milling machine .......... not much chance of saving the harmonic balancer but you might save the crank .
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Grind the weld until it is slightly proud, then flap wheel it flush. Pray that the weld penetration was poor, and get the puller onto it to break out the weld. Worst comes to worse, grind the weld out of the crank snout with a die-grinder.... will not do the crank balance much good, but if dressed up later the inbalance will probably be handled by a new harmonic balancer.

What Blacky said. (if you are really keen, or desperate)

Personally I reckon you have buckleys of saving either.

There may have well been a reason that the harmo was welded on....perhaps it kept walking off beforehand, so the crank might have been rooted anyway.

Id check the sixe of the bore, and depending on its serviceability, drop the whole lump at the scrappys.

Thanks guys
I will follow your advice, and see how it goes. I am a bit short on equipment as I retired to a farm down here in Tas. Since putting out the call amongst my friends in Tassie for grey motor parts I have collected a number of parts and contacts with parts.
I am pretty much with you wot179, I am thinking I am going to have to tear down the spare EJ motor I bought, for the head, and if it is ok put that into the ute.

I was hoping to keep everything stock standard, save for a set of jellybeans, but at least it will be a grey motor.

Quick up date- pulled down the spare motor today and bugger weeping rust in number 5 pot- rust looks terminal in the bore. The guy that sold it to me has turned it over to show it was ok but scored the bore!!!!! Bugger Bugger Bugger again
Haven't checked or measured anything too guttered.
Hopefully the crank is ok and the I can replace this into the welded up crank block. Fingers crossed that block is good.

Looks like those other offers may need to be called in. I had a head lined up as a spare and if this one has leaked then I may need it.

Why is everything so hard- I know part of the joys of working on a 50 year old car.

Edit for update- it is off!!!!
Amazing what a grinder and bearing puller will do- plenty of problems with this crank but those will have to wait
