Chassis Support?

Post by row1 »

Hey Again people.

If I'm going to drop a 350 Chev and Turbo 350g\box in my FB.

I've been told that the FB chassis is a bit weak,

and have been told that I'll need to get the whole chassis re-inforced

because the FB chassis wont cop the power of a V8 it'll just end up twisting and warping.

Note: I'm not putting a tame and timid 350 chev into the FB.

I was just wondering if I should re-inforce the chassis.

Or will it be right to leave it as is?

Has anyone put a tuff V8 into an FB before?

did they get the chassis re-inforced?

Let me know eh?

Cheers

I have to put a chassis kit in my early holden for a warmed over 202 in SA so that should answer your question.
If you crawl under your car you will see that there is no "real" chassis as such, just a few bits here and there.
If you decide NOT to fit a chassis, can you post photos of the car after the first time you give a bit of stick ?

haha yeah it looks like a chassis kit might be the way to go then eh?

lol if not, I guess I'll just drive around in a warped fb, lol

all warped and twisted.

How would I go about putting a chassis kit in her?

How much?

Where?

lol all those sorts of questions

is it easy enough to do yourself?

Cheers

Hi Rowan. Yes you will definately have to put an engineer approved (in your state) chassis into your FB for a Chev V8.Rod Hadfield at Castlemaine Rod Shop in VIC makes these and they would probably come with an engineer certificate for approval in all states but you will have to check on this. Also ring your registration authority in your state for approved conversions as in some states they have a maximum permissable engine capacity rule according to the capacity of the original engine.
For example (this is from memory though) In N.S.W the maximum permitted engine (Chev V8 that is) is a 307 but like I said this is "off the top of my head" so to speak so this may not be correct but it gives you an example anyway.
Whatever you do check first with your states rego authority as it may save you a lot of $$$ if you choose an engine that is a non approved conversion and then have to pull it out and spend more $$$ fitting an approved engine.
Hope this helps,

Terry.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

thanks mate...

I'm from Queensland, I think I should be able to put a 350 in it as long as i have a mod plate.

But if not I'll just stick the biggest V8 in it, to get it rego'd and then swap the 350 in it.

There are ways around it, lol

not legally of course.

But I'll talk to my mate the mechanic and see what he has to say.

Cheers

if i was you, i would most definately not plan on fitting a motor (the way you said) after engineers, if you were in an accident, you can kiss $30000+ goodbye.....

it is quite easy to build your own chassis, or simply buy one from castlemaine rod shop (i dont have their details infront of me)
another thing also, there is a hell of a lot of work involved into fitting a v8, so dont think it is a job you would finish in a few days, there are quite a lot of things you will need to work out yourself (ofcourse, this forum will save you a lot of time and money)

the best thing to do first, would be to contact your local RTA, or visit them online (a simple searchon google will get you the link) and go from there

as Terry said, you wouldnt want to spend a sh!tload of $$$ (and ofcourse, hours and hours of your time) on a car, then find out that it is un registerable in your state.

just keep these comment in mind

also, while your on the RTA site (or when you contact them) dont forget to find out if you will actually be able to drive it or not, as i doubt a p plater would be able to legally drive around in a modified fb with a fully worked 350 chev

Just to throw my two cents worth in here,
Queensland Transport will give you a list of recognised engineers for the area you are in, talk to one BEFORE starting anything, then deal with him through the conversion it will make it easier come time to get certified.
The maximum engine size for the FB or EK models is 307ci
it is not worth the legal problems if you were to have an accident you would have no insurance and have to pay all costs for all vehicles in conjunction to huge fines, A friend of mine HAD a 327 in his FB till he got pulled over by the Qld Tport inspectors and copped fines and made tro remove it, they will even go so far as to conduct a volumetric capacity test if they feel it MAY be suspect! he told themm it was a 307, they tested and all hell broke loose,
DEFINATELY NOT WORTH IT!

Hoping everyone is finding my new Avatar less "Distracting" and of course it is not directed at anyone or anything either currently living or deceased, hopefully it may just be allowed to remain!

Yep there is alot of work in it. Possibly the biggest being making and welding the plate to the subframe for the bracing of it (if you choose not to by a CRS kit). The subframe connectors can be made by anyone with a bit of metal fab skills. Extractors, Trans tunnel etc...

Strange how in Vic you can fit a 350 yet not in Queensland
Speed and Style........... One day I'll get the speed bit.

Just talked to my mate the mechanic,

I can put a 350 chev into my FB, but there are certain things I have to do to the car.

So I can legally put the 350 chev into the car.

He does road worthy's, he said that there are certain processes to take, to put a 350 in.

But in the end it's all legal anyways

Cheers

Rowan I'd still talk to your rego authorities to be absolutely sure. It's not going to hurt to have your mechanic mates statement verified is it?

yeah i spose not.

but he said that there are forms that he has to fill out and send away to the RTA and wait for them to send them back and stuff.

It sounds the ridge didge.

The RTA, you can't ring them on the phone, It's hopeless.

you get stuck with one of those automated things

If you are ringing from a phone

Press 1

*beep*
...

If your phone has buttons

Press 1

If your phone wasnt manufactured with buttons

Imagine that it does, and press 2.

OK GUYS HERES WHERE ITS AT IN NSW. I AM IN THE MIDDLE OF A FULL MOD AND REBUILD OF A CHEV EK. IT HAS A CHASSIS KIT HZ BRAKES RACK AND PINIPON STEERING 9 INCH DIFF ETC ETC. CURRENTLY IN NSW ( AND I'VE DONE A LOT OF RESEARCH) THE EK WEIGHS 1120KG AS THE RTA KNOWS IT. ACCORDING TO THEIR GUIDELINES FOR VEHICLE MODIFICATIONS MAXIMUM ENGINE SIZE IS 1120KG X .294= 329CI.THE ONLY CATCH IS THE ENGINE MUST MEASURE THIS CI CAPACITY EXACTLY.OVERBORED ENGINES WILL DEEM THEM ILLEGAL,THEREFORE THE PREVIOUS MENTIONED 307 CI IS THE BIGGEST. I AM LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE A STANDARD BORE 327 SO I AM LEGAL ACCORDING TO MY ENGINEER AND THE RTA GUIDELINES. THERE IS ALSO ANOTHER CATCH IF YOU USE A ENGINE FROM ANOTHER CAR IT MUST COMPLY WITH ITS POLLUTION ADRS FROM THE YEAR OF THE ENGINE, IF HOWEVER YOU BUY A BRAND NEW BLOCK AS A REPLACEMENT IT HAS NO REFERNCE TO ADRS AND MUST MEET POLLUTION ADRS FROM THE CAR YOU PUT IT IN. WELL THE EK DOESN'T HAVE ANY POLLUTION ADRS.
WE ARE VERY HAPPY ABOUT THIS. NSW RTA IS ALSO IN THE PROCESS OF NEW GUIDELINES WHICH ARE GOING TO MAKE MODIFICATION VERY DIFFICULT TO ACHEIVE SO GET TO IT IF YOU HAVE ANY OUTSTANDING PLANS. REGARDS EK 283.
