G'day Trend setters.
Putting a VN V8 and Auto into an FB.
I Have a conundrum which no doubt has been dealt with before by you crazy modders
The current VN setup for the speedo has a 10 PPR hall type sender unit feeding the speedo, from there, the pulses are fed through a "Divide by 5" curcuit, sending the now 2 PPR signal to the ECM. I'm aware of a product called the ECD100. This is a fully programmable device which intercepts the pulses from the tranny sender and drives a cable to then run the old mechanical speedo. Is this the only solution? The reason for asking is the US$300 price tag. I have studied up on the signal required by the ECM . Apart from triggering the check engine lamp if there is no signal to the ECM, the ECM needs the signal for the converter lock signal, idle control and injector cut (to save juice when coasting down hills).
Anyone there who has an easy (and cheaper way) to have the old speedo with the ECM getting correct road speed signals?
Geez you sound like your 10 steps ahead of most blokes!!
Surely someone would have done a mod like this.
Im going to have the same problem as you as im doing the same set up, but i think Im going to go a new set of gauges that are calibrated to work straight up. Theres a few different brands out of the US that are cheaper than you think. Not real handy if you want the original set up though

You lost me after this bit......
Speed and Style........... One day I'll get the speed bit.
From my enquiries it might be allot easier than expected, the electrical piece that connects to the box( no technical names used here) has a manual shaft, been told by auto cables that the FB cable will connect straight up! Let's hope I didn't get rid of the orig cable lol
wanker????
I'd rather consider myself as an "owner operator"!!
Ring Cae they have a peice you remove commy speedo drive and fit this it wires up to computer then you screw your cable to it sort of looks like an adapter with wires out of the middle under $200 I think
Thanks Cocko
I assume you are referring to CAE in Castlemaine. Ill give them a call tomorrow. Your description makes sense to me, and sounds like the ideal fix. I'll have to find out if the resolution from the CAE product is 2 pulses per rotation,(as it comes from the OEM speedo after the 10 PPR raw signal from the original sensor). I've been studying up on how the VN ECM operates, and while it's not as complex as the ones which followed (EG Batch fire and no MAF or knock sensor), it still won't run too well if it doesn't get the signal from the speed sensor. I've even stumbled onto some Delco hacking literature, which has whetted my appetite for more understanding of these beasts.
Fatboy, I'm curious as to how you run the lock-up on the converter on your setup with the 179, assuming the TH700 came from a crumpledoor. I've heard some people wire a manual switch so they can engage it when on the highway (for example).
