Fitting a new tunnel
Fitting a new tunnel
Ok, got the hole cut and he tunnel is ready to weld in. It doesn't look exactly right but I checked and it is the right part for the right job. Wish me luck.!

Re: Fitting a new tunnel
I don't know what to say to that mick. This is the first tunnel I have done and I never even thought to look to see if it may be an original auto tunnel. Shit! the new tunnel does sit up a fair bit higher though. Anyway as usual, I race in and cut things up without seeing the obvious. Took the photo to pretend I was a dummie. Looks like I didn't need to pretend hey? May have wasted 2 days work. Lucky for me I have a mile of time and nothing else to do ..not. Shit again !!

Re: Fitting a new tunnel
The average bloke would cut it out in one piece. I, on the other hand, cut it out in about 4 pieces. But how can you tell which tunnel it is? I believe you but in my current pissed off mood, It would be my luck to weld it back in and then find out the gearbox won't fit in. Only to then find out that you are cross eyed or just talking the piss out of little old me.

Re: Fitting a new tunnel
Many, many moons ago I asked Rod Hadfield the same question, whilst ordering a crap-load of bits for the V8 project. The answer I got was to measure the width (about 3") of the crossmember (not that I can remember the numbers he was looking for... those numbers have long been dissolved in VB). My notes show that my crossmember was 42mm wide, and was apparently a manual body (and tunnel). Apparently the auto crossmembers (and associated tunnels) were different. My TH350 fits (just...), though methinks I will end up asking Dave to weld in the CRS tunnel for some more clearance. But how can you tell which tunnel it is?
Cheers,

Re: Fitting a new tunnel
manual tunnel is very small with a panel that unbolts at the firewall down to the top of the hump, auto is about the size of the aftermarket one you have is one piece (no bolt in panel) and there is a roundish tube crossmember on the inside of the floor back roughly near the front of the seat it connects the underfloor brace

Re: Fitting a new tunnel
Well mick, that is definitely an auto tunnel then. Bugger. I suppose it's character building but I reckon I've got enough character already. Oh well, it's not as if everyone with an early Holden will read this post and realise what an idiot I am.
