Iv'e had the odd "Hot Backfire" too. Retarded engines tend to backfire through the carby. The second go sounded better after Dave pulled it up a bit. In my experience, F O R D S
tend to like a fair bit of static advance, whereas Grey engines get all cranky and harsh on any more than standard settings ( I set them up using the secret door-ball bearing, and the little nick on the distributor body lining up with the centre of the rotor, then work from there as I dont have any sort of timing light. Just gently tap the vaccume advance toward the sideplate with a hammer handle. Gently LOOSEN the screw on the dizzy a LITTLE bit if it wont move. I do this with a long flat blade screwdriver through the right side of the subframe. always remember to tighten it up again, and that the dissy hasn't popped up, as this drives the oil pump. All this sounds VERY rough, but it's what I have always done.
I just drive the car and listen to it (This may be hard for you at the moment!) I'm not sure of your camshaft etc. but my bet is that your car will be happiest on a nearly stock setting
timing wise. I am definitely not a mechanic, but I can dial in old cars, and keep them going on a shoestring.
All that fluff aside Stuey, You and Dave and all the other guys have done the best job on that car and it's great to see it GOING! I'm coming down at Xmas to bang a gear on Petes EJ at Scottys place. A good, second hand one from BrizVegas, and I could have Rustys Dungers on the job as well. So we'll soon know whether I'm all just WIND and BLUSTER!
