Starting 2 restore 61 Ek..where do I start?
Hi,
I'm new to the forum and I'm finding it very useful. I'm finally going to restore my 61 Ek. I want to do as much work myself as possible. I will need someone to cut the rust out and repaint it. But I want to strip it. Do I start by removing all the badges and bumpers off, engine out and seats out so all I have is the shell? Also sharks the best paint stripper? And what price should I pay for it? How much would I need of it?
Sorry so many questions. This is a new project.
Also I live in Sydney. If anyone can recommend a place that does good respraysand and cuts rust out.
Thanks.

Sorry that's not meant to say sharks.. It's meant to say ..wants the best paint stripper?
Re: Starting 2 restore 61 Ek..where do I start?
start with all the delicate stuff first - trim, badges ornaments
bumpers guards grill gives you better access to remove the motor
dont forget to bag and label everything (i used freezer bags)

I'd recommend going through some of the build threads. So much to learn from them.
But to do it properly I'd suggest stripping it down to a bare shell and start from there. That'll keep you busy for a while

Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and
oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital

i'de recomend that you know exactly what you are in for and that it is NOT going to be cheap, as i'de hate to see yet another car pulled apart with all enthusiasim only for the owner to find out it is to hard and expensive and the car ends up for sale at a fraction of what it is worth or worse still ends up as scrap
then bag and tag as you go probly not worth taking badges and strips off as they would be easier to get at once the panels are off the car, things like bumpers, blinkers, grill etc yes pull them off kinda makes access to the engine a bit easier

sometimes yor just better off shitting in yor hands and clapping

Hi Kate
Welcome to the forum. You're in the right place
Is the EK a runner? How much rust is in it? Have you got a budget? Do you want to do a full resto? or a rolling resto?
Theres a couple of guys on the forum that live around Sydney that do rust and paint - bootlegger and rustydungers.
regards
Stewart
ps we need some pics of the EK...

Re: Starting 2 restore 61 Ek..where do I start?
Thanks for all the advice. Labeling and bagging the parts is a great idea. I'm aware this is not going to be an overly cheap project hence why I'm going to strip it & do as much as i can and why i have joined this forum to get good contacts to do work on my car and so i can trust it will be a good job.
Parisian -I figure if I'm going to do a restoration I'm going to do a full resto. There's a little rust but I'm sure I may discover more once I strip it. I have owned the Ek for about 6 yrs and bought it from a lady who her parents bought it new. She looked after it well. I garage it so it's in ok condition. It was registered until a month ago when I realized because I was registering it I wasn't restoring it. Now I have to. I kept the original plates tho of course. I haven't really put a budget price. However I'm not in a position to spend 20 grand sorry Wayne:) These rust and paint people your talking about in Sydney; have they done Ek.? What's their details? Also how hard is it to get the original looking colour. My Ek is blue .. The same as your picture Wayne.
Wayne I will get in contact with you sometime soon.
I will put pics up soon. Thanks again guys.

Re: Starting 2 restore 61 Ek..where do I start?
Depending on how far you want to go, you don't have to spend 20 grand, though there's some resto's here that are worth way above that, as things like retrimming seats, new floor mats, etc, can be hideously expensive
Mine cost nowhere near that, but I didnt touch the interior, kept a majority of the old rubbers, nor did I have the inside of the car painted

The guy that did my car (Bootlegger - Dave) has done a handful of cars on here. Pretty experienced with FB's/EK's. Same goes for Rustydungers, who's doing Wayne's car

Give me a call if you want. Like mick says its pretty easy to pull them apart full of enthusiasm and get overwhelmed the the car dies a slow death eventually being parted out.
