ek 138 wont start.
H
i everyone, i am a little stuck as my ek wont start. I reversed it up some car ramps to check the diff oil and after i rolled off and tried to start her, she backfired a few times and the battery went flat. I have spark at the plugs and fuel at the carby but she wont fire ??? I was thinking maybe the fuels not getting past the carby for some reason, any ideas anyone thanks, Mark Danton.Re: ek 138 wont start.

If it was running fine and now suddenly isn't, then I'd keep it simple.
Here's what I'd say was possibly wrong given that you just had it on a ramp and on more of an angle than it would be used to.
1. Carb float has moved higher than normal and become stuck (gently tap float chamber with a wooden hammer handle).
2. 50 years of crap in the petrol tank has settled around the fuel pick-up and either blocked it or the fuel filter (disconnect fuel line from the carb and have someone crank the engine to see if the fuel pump is pumping fuel. Use a jar or something to catch the fuel).
Also, could be that it's just flooded.
There's all sorts of other stuff, but I'm just thinking about what is likely to have been caused by the angle that the car was on when it was on the ramps.

Thanks Alan i will check that out too

Re: ek 138 wont start.

but yeah as Allan said probably something to do with the fuel tip a little fuel down the carby and
see if it starts and runs also if your battery is semi flat its much harder to get a good crank going
so charge it up

Re: ek 138 wont start.
ok, have fully charged battery, carby seems ok, fuel pumping good. Turn the key and she backfires every time tried turning the dizzy, (was very loose ) but cant find a spot to start her. I am not much of a mechanic and living in a small country town it is hard to get one here thanks

You will be before too longnotnad kram wrote:I am not much of a mechanic...

You have an EK, and therefore have no choice in the matter.

Yeah, but you're the EK Whisperer. All you have to do is go 'PSSHHHTTT' and point your finger at a grey motor for it to start behavingSunnyTim wrote:The only EK I own that doesn't go is missing an engine

Re: ek 138 wont start.
Hi Mate,
Don't know if this helps but is it possible that the tilt from putting it on the stands has allowed some crud to get into the jets in the carby?
I had this happen once on my 138, and it was pissing fuel from the old stromy when i tried to start it. ( it did fire but ran real rough and pissed fuel from carby)
Ole mate suggested swap ignition leads 3 & 5, crank it, (it will backfire a couple of times), which i did, and when i put them back, it ran perfectly again.
Just a thought.
Cheers

Re: ek 138 wont start.
Ok thanks guys for all your help, I couldnt find it so I rolled down to the mechanic who found a little piece of metal in the dizzy which must of moved while reversing up the ramps, it was arcing out across to that. Anyhow he tidied up some wires and connected my diamond dot radio and $50 later she's a runner with abc radio, life just got good again.
Thanks again to you all, Mark
