second one sort of the same thing but came and went sometimes drive it and it's ok runs smooth and no noises, then other times bouncing all over and making weird noises, strange thing it was working fine then just made a big noise and went back to 0

keep blowing up my speedo
as the title says i've blown up 2 speedos now any ideas as to why this may be happening, first one the speed indicator started being eratic and making noises then stoped working but didn't return to 0

Gday Ratbox
Has the inner cable broken or has the speedo died?
Mine went the same as yours on the way to Forbes.
What I thought was happening was, the cable was twisting up, & then
springing free when it overcome the friction of the restriction caused by the tighter curves of the cable when I rerouted it inside the dash.
This made the speedo indacator bounce right around and back,
until the cable couldn't take it anymore, & snapped.
When the speedo flared up, it was accompanied by a metal fuzzing noise.( hard to explain a noise in print
)
The speedo head of yours that didn't return to zero may have been damaged from bouncing of the top speed mark.
Cheers
Jeff

was the speedo cause i undid the cable from the back of the gauge and cable still turns, at first i thought it was the cable cause that's what sort of noise it made when it died like a spring had let go, that metal fuzzing noise sort of sounds right
speedo gear should of been ok by my tomtom 100-110KPH was 60-65MPH on the speedo
by my tomtom van's reasonably stable at 188KPH
been told by the local highway cop that the tomtoms are prety acurate within about 3KPH

Re: keep blowing up my speedo
My FC Wagon did this on the way back from Castlemaine, when I pulled the busted unit out there were fine metal shavings everywhere. Apparently a bit of fine machine oil fixes the problem if you catch it early enough.ratbox wrote:as the title says i've blown up 2 speedos now any ideas as to why this may be happening, first one the speed indicator started being eratic and making noises then stoped working but didn't return to 0

Speedos can be damaged if you fit a universal inner that you can get from auto spares shop for around $20.
If you dont cut the new inner to the correct length as the old original cable it can cause problems. If the inner is a few mill too long it puts pressure onto the fine mechanism inside the speedo. The speedo will cop it for a while but eventually the inner acts like a drill and stuffs the speedo.
Most inners fail where the cable takes a sharp turn before going into the box. try and run it over the top of the box up near the bell housing and let it come into the box in a wide arc without any kinks, tight bends cause the inner to "flick" which in turn cuases the speedo to bounce up and down by about 20mph. also had the speedo reading stay at 20mph when the car was stopped. didnt drop back until i reversed down the drive.
Other thing that stuffs speedo drives in the box and speedos is driving backwards too quick.
I had one mechanic say not to oil the inner before i installed it. i reckon a coat of light oil has gotta be better than letting the inner spin a dry case.
All fun and games aye??
