Australia Day - Motor fest

had a few spare hours yesterday, poped in to the Australia Day - Motor fest - in sydney.

on the manly ferry - what a view. old wooden sailing ship, Opera house n the bridge...

Not see one of these before, but learned my uncle once had one... Really like them. nice line had a 4 speed on floor, not sure if that is standard ??

Not many FB/EK's do turn up to this show. I know the FE/FC club always have a good turnout, though it is a very long day. From the time you have to turn up to when you're allowed to leave it's almost 12 hours

yer its certainly is a long day, ran into a few of the NSW club members, they agree. very long day.

YEP! their were some nice FE n FC's on show... I think my next project will be an FC.... one day/???????

I went this year as well and I had a ball!! Thought the old NRMA holden was pretty cool that Phil Illfield had there. Then all the monaros, toranas etc..Major drool session haha.
Im very interested in putting my ute in it next year, I have a beautifully straight HQ Belmont ute, 73 model, which is in mickey original condition and a fantastic example of the car. (Even the old radio still goes great guns! )
Im nearly finished restoring it to its former glory (one or two minor touches, eg small dint, want to replace the grille, and the rubber in the floor pan, and getting carby rebuilt to freshen her up a bit..otherwise its done!

Phil was telling me you have to be invited or something to go to the NRMA motorfest and show your car? How do I go about getting 'Benny Belmont' (as its affectionately known by people) in there?

I also have a concourse '72 Honda CB350 motorbike, 40 year old bike that has only done 7000 miles in its whole life- quite the find and a collectors dream!!
(haha strange mix of vehicles- Im certainly not your typical 20 year old female! haha)

Any tips on how to start going about showing my two pride and joys now Im living in Sydney? Im very keen and very willing to learn the different things involved Any help or tips would be great! Thanks for your time guys!

Also, any friendly clubs you recommend to join? (I've just moved to Sydney this year and am very interested in joining one!

20 years ago I met a girl in brisbane who had a hq ute three on the tree and was motorbike/ car mad.
Did all her own mechanical work.
We were together for two years. Great chick (always in the shed with me working on stuff) but other issues split us up.

Girls like that are a rare breed.

Luckily my wife is great. Doesnt get into the shed but happy to let me indulge in my obsession.

I dont do all my own mechanical work but Im slowly getting there! Soak up as much info as I can..
Sort of getting people to show me first time (e.g say changing over my drum brakes or something) and have a crack at doing it myself the next time.
Wish I knew more as things would be a fair bit cheaper, plus Id love to do another HQ one day, but by myself mostly so I save money, and perhaps make a rat. Thatd be cool.

Guess not many girls are interested in the old school things, shame because alot of my friends dont understand the kick you get out of having these great old girls!! Reallty hate people who think its just 'an old car' too...(slamming my door..MAJOR BUG BEAR!! )

Hoping I meet others in my age group I guess at clubs, club meets or shows etc. But then again it really does not worry me, probably prefer to talk to the older guys more as they can put a decent conversation together and have life experience etc to talk about.

The key is to mix with the people that really do know not the gunnas.

Ive got an old mechanic mate of mine and he is always talking about things like his 1968 mistake.

What he means by that is thats the year he stuffed up something that i might be having trouble with now.

He let me rebuild my merlin in his workshop. Even though both of us had never rebuilt one it was great having his experience at hand.

Your hq is a really simple mechanical toy. They are easy to work on and cheap to fix.

Todays people are really kidding themselves that a modern car is more economical than say what you are driving.

Over the last couple of months ive been pulling my hair out with the erratic behavior of the transmission in my falcon.
After spending $600 at the transmission place it kept doing it.
His advice when I took it back was we will look at a few other things at $100 per hour.

With no guarantee he could fix it I decided to just start changing electronic crap myself starting with some sensors.

Its too hard now. Ive reverted back to old stuff.

My every day driver is a 73 celica. I do around 700km a week in it.

Apart from changing the points now and again its a pleasure to drive and always gets heaps of looks from the young blokes.
Ive done over 10000km in it in six months and every morning I look forward to going out in it.
