Holley Hickup

Hi All,
I think the trouble is timing as the carby was doing BIG backfires when you gave it even just a little gas.
The distributor seems loose so I turned it counter clockwise and it actually fired up with no carby backfires. Took for a slow run down to mobile an all good, filled up and driving home in 4th or 5th the rev's dropped under load an if you left the gas on the carby backfired followed by a big flatspot and loss of rev's. The temp got up to 90 and was 103 after car was turned off the fuel filter was bubbling but I cant be sure if it was bubbling when it was running .
However when the car got over 80 deg when stopping at the lights there was a brief gurgling/slurping sound.
How loose should the distributer be? An will turning it anymore solve the carby backfire problem, or will it harm the motor?

It is a 600 holley with no choke and its on a mild but tired 253

Any help would be great as D-day is creeping up fast to get the ek's roady and then get its TAS to VIC tranfur pass by VICroads and with with these hidden extras happening it's gunna make it real hard if it can't be solved by the experts.
Thanks in advance

loose distributor

Hey collector,

the dizzy should not be loose at all - it should be tight and unable to be moved by hand. I suggest you set the timing at the correct setting, tighten the dizzy bolt, and all your problems will be solved. Check out a manual for the correct method.

Just to throw a cat amongst the pigeons I had some probs with a 253 once after I changed some gaskets. The sucker would'nt run so I loosened the dizzy and tried moving it untill it fired.Once running I got out the timing light and the timing was way out and when I tried to correct it then it would die and not start. After many hours I decided to tune by ear and got it fantastic, but according to the timing light it was way out.Now in my case the dizzy was not one tooth out as I had not removed it so I began to look elsewhere.I luckly found out that the harmonic balancer had slipped 1/4 of a turn (giving a false timing reading)and replaced it ASAP.
Had I not of noticed it may of come apart while going down the street and may of gone through the radiator.
Good luck with the rego boys and hopefully they may appreciate your car not like the pr**ks that did the rego on mine.

A 600 Holley on a 253 is a bit too much carb , it would be much better with a 465 or thereabouts.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.
