one thing the above link doesnt say is to get the part fairly clean...soaking in kero and then blast it with a gurnie is good.

who says you're a dick! shame!

My local Franklins has stopped selling the soda crystals...

Thanks Mick. It's verging on madness - it won't be happening again. Can't say I have tried it on chrome but I don't see why it wouldn't. The chrome plating process uses electrolysis to plate so if you reverse the polarity it would strip. I'd be wary of fumes with chrome.

Thanks Sam.

Thanks for posting that info Stewart.

I was talking to a guy today who has used the soda solution very successfully on old Lambretta scooters and swears by it. He did say though that there may be a a chance of hydrogen impregnation (causes hydrogen embrittlement - not a big deal on hinges but stressed components and the like - it might be worth checking out) but that can be fixed by baking in a hot oven so he says? He is going to send me a link to an article and when I get it I will whack it on here.

From a blasters perspective I also reckon its great as it means for a lot of moving parts such as the hinges they don't need an injection of abrasive grinding paste into there innards. The more passive electrolysis is a much better idea for that sort of thing and something every punter can do at home.

RB - I reckon you would want to check on doing chrome before you kick off and maybe do some shitty samples first. I used another electrolysis method very successfully to strip nickel of some stuff although the solution was weak sulphuric acid and the plating came off very quickly.

Another option for the chrome might be tried and true molasses and water 4 parts water to one of molasses as it only eats rust?

Just a note to you Stewie.

Spring is on it's way and that means SPRAY PAINTING TIME. Is old Jack going to look down and see some lilac hitting the metal this year?

Cheers.

Hi Dave Are you referring to soda blasting or electrolysis?

I read that molasses is not self limiting - it will eat rust as well as good steel - I know - don't ask how I found out though... Electrolysis is self limiting to rust only.

I'd reckon so... :D 8)

Mick - to keep the chrome but remove the rust you need to soak the rim in Oxalic Acid and water. I've used this on chrome dragster bike parts with great results. Keeps the chrome and eats the rust. Bought it from Bunnings. Diggers Brand. Powder form. I'll have to check the mix ratio...

As far as the molasses goes I've used on bike parts and it will chase the rust in deep but haven't left in in for too long without checking it, washing off the rust scum and seeing how much more to go.

My brother in law up in South West Rocks always has a huge tank full of the stuff and has never had any 'moments' with molasses and has done a hell of a lot with it including full valanced guards, cowls, doors etc. Probably down to how much time you put into looking over the stuff as the days roll by.

The soda I was talking to the guy about today was electrolysis although i would like to find someone within striking distance of Sydney who can soda blast the front clip for me before I do the work on it. It isn't bad enough for grit in my book.

So when does Jack begin smiling ?

Cheers.

I just opened up my email and here are the article links but be careful as the first has some rude words and the second one is a bit of a science lesson

Hi Dave

Thanks for those links. I dropped a light weight bracket into molasses and forgot about it...went on holidays...came home...no more bracket... As you say if you keep an eye on it you'd be fine.

Some updates. What I did in May 2011...wheel rims. 2 original rims and 3 others courtesy of rustydungers. :)

I used a combination of paint stripper, deox-c, electrolysis, wet n dry and also high pressure water to clean up the rims.
